What a ship. It's good to see the Chinese nervous. That's certainly an unorthodox destroyer. Thanks for the photos Normandy.

Good to see Japan launching ships like this, as the Chinese are greatly expanding their naval capabilities.
Still, seems like a very big ship, and investment, just to carry helicopters.

The Japanese are forbidden from having offensive military weapons. The Japanese say this is a defensive weapon. I'd say it could go either way...

Re: Japan's largest warship since WW II
That was part of the constitution immediately after WWII.
Times have changed, with North Korea, and China both becoming threats to Japan, and its sovereignty. Think the Japanese Self Defence Force should start to have capabilities to deal with this further offshore, and not just in its own backyard.
Doubt the US would have any objections to a little extra naval help from Japan, in the area.
Just my thoughts.

Sometimes a good defense is a pre-emptive offense.
Sure looks like an aircraft carrier, as big as one in WWII?
Maybe they're going to start using the V-22 Osprey?
Osprey lands on Japanese ship:

I had no idea the V-22's prop apparatus folded like that btw.... and there she goes right down the elevator.
Must be the same ship? What else has a deck elevator like that?

I would have no objection to Japan growing their military. Although we have a presence in the far east, it's not it once was and China continues to increase its military. And let's not forget the true wild card, North Korea.
One of the articles about this new vessel was the reference to not only the use of the V22 but also the next all purpose fighter, which will have vertical lift capabilities, the F35B.
