Small Scale Military Headquarters

I'm surprise and not surprised that there will be USS LYNDON B. JOHNSON---especially considering the other controversial names recently.

I'd be OK with a USS Lyndon B Johnson. He did mess up the Vietnam situation, or from another view, handled it the best he could, but did more to contribute to equality and social justice of any president since Lincoln. So, I'm OK with a ship being named after him.

But the USS Cesar Chavez? WTF? I live in the area and among the people he helped (or claimed to help), but he never was a Martin Luther King by any stretch of the word. If a ship does get named that, it might as well be used to patrol the waters off Mexico looking for drug smugglers

USS Giffords would have an interesting tone to it, but still I wonder why and if its still a bit soon? She seems so nice and upbeat (for a politician) and not the type of person you'd name a warship after... Why not a USS John McCain?

John P Murtha should be scrapped since he was always an anti-war advocate. But if this random ship naming for current political figures is the way to go, then I want to have fun with all sorts of names: USS William Jefferson Clinton (submarine, for obvious dirty reasons), USS Barak Obama (some sort of garbage scow) and I could go on...

There already is a USS JOHN S. McCAIN---DDG-56, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer which is named after the Senator's father and grandfather.

Instead of Chavez, LBJ, Giffords, et al, I'm sure there are many, many Navy pilots and sailors that proved themselves in combat that deserve a ship to be named after them more than Chavez, LBJ, Giffords, et al. For example, off the top of my head, how about a USS ROGER HEDRICK or USS IRA KEPFORD---they are more deserving than Giffords.

If the Navy wanted to honor LBJ (who, if I remember correctly, faked his combat record for political purposes), Chavez, Giffords, et al, then there are probably many Navy facilities such as administrative buildings, hospital wings, training facilities, etc.

On the plus side, I think Ray Mabus will no longer be Secretary of the Navy in five months.
