origin of Navy WW II "White"?

What is the origin of Navy World War II aircraft being named "White" such as "White 29", "White 167", etc?

I think because all the numbers on the Navy planes were white.

Thanks. That makes sense looking at the white numerals. I saw a Corgi PBJ-1 which was named "Black" and it had black numbers painted on.
