I was watching "Saving Private Ryan", again, for custom ref. I noticed the German they let go, was wearing a Splinter Smock alond with a masquito netted helmet. Was this common issue geer omong the heer units?

From what I understand, the splinter camo was introduced in mid-1944 and was common among the regular army, especially in normandy.
I thought the guy they let go was SS?

I he was SS he was wearing a splinter smock, then later a splinter zeltbahn?? Which is funny because in the end of the movie, he is with an SS unit.

He was a regular Wermacht soldier, wearing splinter Zeltbahn. You can clearly see what he was wearing right after the MG-42 nest assault, when he's pushed against the sandbags with his hands held up.

His uniform didn't change. He's wearing the same thing when Opham (sp?) shot him at the end of the movie.

I think a lot of people confuses that guy to the SS soldier that killed Mellish during that close combat fight. They're not the same guy. The only similarity between them is their haircut.

Which was done to make them look more like neo nazi skinheads.
Only convicts had their heads shaved like that at that time.
All it did was confuse people into thinking it was always the same guy.
