Pink P-40's of the Pacific??

Post by Dauntless » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:52 pm

While looking for info on the Gilbert Islands, and the invasion of Tarawa etc., I was reading about the USAAF who reenforced the few islands that Japan hadn't taken yet to the east, with 45th and 46th fighter squadrons of P-40E's and N's of the 7th Airforce that were painted a coral pink color because of the conditions of the sandy coral atolls they operated out of.
These were planes that flew out of Canton and Baker Islands. These were vital islands that kept the supply lines to Australia open. These were reinforced with combat troops as early as 1942, and a must not lose territory, with a Pan American sea plane and airstrip at Canton already established in the late 30's, then later in 1943 in the buildup for an invasion of Tarawa and Makin islands.
Many bomber groups also were there to soften up Tarawa etc.

Found some pics to support that.

This is really cool for a possible 1:32 P-40E or N (if they made an N in 1:32)
I know Revell made an E.
Of course, I'd rather have 1:18!

There's other stuff I still need to do research on like the B-24 Heavy Bomber group, and smaller attack bomber squadrons.

Weird...

Apparently the FOV 1:32 P-39 Aircobra "Devastating Devil" is suppose to be this same coral color.
Based also in the Gilbert Islands on Makin.

I don't know, it sure looks a little vibrant, almost pink.
