Brothers in Arms

Last night at WM I found a new X-BOX game called Brothers in Arms, Road to Hill 30. The game is made by UBISOFT, the same company as Ghost Recon and Rainbow 6, 3. The game is based on a true story of the exploits of the 101st and their efforts to take Carentan. I set the difficulty to normal and jumped right in. The game play is very similar to Rainbow 6, 3. With the exception that, when aiming your weapon, it wobbles around, unlike the servo like procession of Halo and Ghost Recon. And like in Rainbow 6, the weapons kick, hard! When firing your weapon you need to wait until your sights are coincident with your target before pulling the trigger. Tonight I will pull my K98 out and compare the weight and effort to aim and see how closely the programmers are to the real thing. The AI of the Germans is the same as RB63 as well, kind of lame. It would be nice if they were closer to the AI in Ghost Recon when set to elite.
Oh yea, I can't forget the foul language. It is difficult to play when my 3 year old is in the dinning room playing play doe when a sgt. is screaming "WHERES MY F@#KING ARMOR!" or "get your sorry a$$ over here." The audio is VERY good.
I definitely recommend it to any one who enjoys RB6 3 or Ghost Recon. It is a very difficult game. Just the way I like it.

The game is receiving some pretty good reviews on Gamespot from the fans '9.7 Superb' (which is higher than MOHAA in its heyday). Can't wait to try it.

It hits the shelves today for PS2 and while I usually wait a few months for a game's price to drop I think I will buy this one today at lunch. The game even includes real individuals (MoH winners from the 101st and others) and real locations in France so it seems attention to detail was paid. I know there is another thread on this but if somebody could do a direct comparison b/w CoD & BiA that would be great

While I enjoyed CoD's scripted mission, the MP never seemed to live up to the immensely cool mods that were created for the MoHAA universe. So many great maps and missions.
My all-time favorite WWII game is Hidden & Dangerous 2. H&D2 required the game players to be relatively intelligent, and thus hasn't enjoyed the mass popularity of 'Call of Duty' or 'MoHAA' despite having superior graphics, art direction, and engine.

Last night I played a level where I escorted an M-5 into a town. Overcoming MG nests and AT guns. At one MG nest I worked my way around and chucked a grenade into the sand bag bunker. The German soldiers picked up the grenade and threw it back! That was unexpected!
In the next chapter I had the support of an M-4. We had to clear a field and secure a farm. After clearing the field and approaching the farm I encountered a MG-42 on what appears to be a building roof. I ran to a stone fence for cover and worked my way around. Only to find a second MG nest in the driveway leading to the farm. I called up my fire support team to the wall. Then ordered the Sherman to take out the MG nest in the drive way. The tank just sat there and ignored my order, even after repeating it several times. In the mean time my team arrived. Instead of holding position next to me, they ran around the wall and where sawed in half by the MG. At this point I became very frustrated and ended the chapter.
This is the best game I have played so far. Despite the poor decisions of a few soldiers and having to hit a Panzer tank four times with a Panzerfoust to destroy it. It is still a great game.

Mr. Football, try going to FKMODS servers under the MP Team Deathmatch section. They have incredible custom maps with custom sounds. they also include the silenced sten as well. Highly recommended, they even have a Brecourt Manor map that bears somewhat of a resemblance to the real Brecourt unlike the other map.

I completed Brothers in Arms on normal on Saturday, then completed it on Difficult last night. After doing so I sat down and watched the "extra content". This is an incredible game. I played it through with a mind set similar to any other first person shooter with the producers using "artistic licensing", but based on a real story. In fact the detail of the missions is exactly what Matt Baker encountered in his first 8 days of combat. The team from Gearbox actually went to France and photographed the buildings and towns where Matt Baker fought! They also fired actual WWII weapons at Fort Hood TX.
I would also like to correct a statement I made about the AI of the German soldiers. Their AI improves as the missions progress. The main difference I noticed between the normal setting and difficult was in aiming. It was like trying to stick the south poles of two magnets together. The sights on the gun wanted to push off the target. And I was constantly needing to use more stick force to aim. This gets to be very frustrating. Also the Germans are much better shots. Their accuracy with a MP-40 at full auto at long range is incredible! Matt Baker is also one tough soldier. It usually took 6 shots to take him down! Maybe he had a bullet proof vest?
I know my brothers who live and breath Halo will find this game slow and way to difficult. But I on the other had love it and look forward to the next release. Like they say in the end "We still got a war to fight!"
Keep em coming Gearbox and Ubisoft!

I concur - great game, and a ton of fun. HOWEVER - If you have a PS2 this game will suffer slow-down never before seen on the console. I know they had to cut the game down for PS2, but my beef is not with the content but the gameplay - you will think you're playing your old Coleco the way the sprites slow down when things pick up. If you have the option of PC or XBox go with that.

I wish for the X-BOX version, they would have the level load to the hard drive in the beginning of each level. Then when you die and have to restart, it won't take 30 seconds to reload. On difficult I died allot and this became very distracting.

I bought the PS2 version first but gave up. i bought the PC version and sold the PS2 version. if you have PS2, dont bother. you dont get the full expereince of it. i have some quibbles with the game but only minor ones like unable to go prone etc but it is awesome. the attention to detail is incredible. Dead Mans' Corner is faithfully reproduced as it was in 1944! Pretty cool, least to me it was....
