I guess when you have over 60 years of service, its time to be replaced.
Well, goodbye great weapon. To bad, that was my favorite HMG of all time.

It's worth noting that the weapon is being retired, but not the cartridge it fires, that will remain the same for the new weapon being designed by General Dynamics. In a way I can see why this is being done, the M2 is a big heavy old sucker, and the move to a lighter weapon with equal or superior performance makes sense for the future.

Even though it's extremely heavy and can be difficult for an inexperienced soldier to properly set up it's a great weapon. As much as I hated Grafenwoehr, I always enjoyed going to the MG range there to fire the 50. Whenever I fired that weapon I was always awed by the sheer sense of power you felt when doing so.
Oh well I guess that's progress. I agree that it's time for a lighter more advanced weapon. Hopefully the military will get as much use from it's replacement.

Thanks for the insight Grog. If something's not broken, don't fix it!

No, all being said, the Ma Duce will serve on for at least another 10-20 years
Probably true. Like most things in the US military and Govt., the wheels grind verrrrry slooooowly...
