Free Armor Books....!!!

Post by ostketten » Sat Jun 21, 2008 6:04 pm

Found this site that has some great armor books for free downloading...

http://www.myallbooks.com/index.php?nam ... startnum=1

OK, it's kind of a pain to download the files, they make you wait like a minute for the free downloads, but I'm in no hurry, but then the files come to you as something called ".rar" which is an archive similar to "zip" files, ok.... so then you need a shareware version of the RAR program to un-pack the files, I also got this as a free download too off Zdnet... whew...like I said it's kind of pain, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad and the un-packed files are save-able as common PDF files which can be read on practically any computer. I downloaded this book, "The Sherman at War" and the quality is excellent.....

No sweat, glad to share it... it is a bit of a pain in the neck to do but once you have done it a time or two, it works pretty good. One thing I'll warn you of...when you go to unpack the RAR archive, it will ask you for a password, be sure you type it in exactly as follows... www.megamagzone.com don't put the "/" in after dotcom or the "http://" in front, or it wont unarchive.

Sometimes the passwords are just megamag or something else.

You have to look at the bottom of the page where the password is listed.
Some books are very well scanned, others not so good, but for free-great.

Too bad not all titles listed are available.

Too bad not all titles listed are available.
Every one of the Armor titles I have tried so far came through without a hitch, but there are nearly 70 pages with 5 titles on each, so I can't say if they are all available or not. Some of the titles are also obviously in foreign languages, mainly German and Russian, so I won't bother to download those. Thus far, the scan quality of the 5 or so books I've downloaded has been quite good, and trust me I've seen some awful PDF scans in my time. Anyhow, free is free, and I intend to grab as many of these that interest me as my time allows. :D

I went through all 70 pages :)
You might be surprised by some of the foreign language vesions.
I've got some that were in russian but had good reference photos.

Everytime I click "Download" ( the option with the word "mirror" beside it) it leads me to a site that simply says "504 gateway time-out error"... Anyone got an explanation???

Anyone got an explanation???
Not a clue. There are two download links.... #1 and #2 (#2 being the mirror site) have you tried both..?? I always use the #1 link (one on the left of "mirror") #2 seems to be in Russian, which I don't read very well.

Yeah that's what I was talking about. Some don't work, some take you to some online date site in russian. If neither mirror works, skip it and try another.

One place was all in russian and nowhere could I find a download button.
I clicked a lot of russian words but nothing.

The tank power series are good, well scanned
Tiger colors is good and the kagero series is also pretty good especially
Sdkfz 234 which has nice scans.

Was anyone able to get these 2 titles from the site?
I don't read Russian and I see no way to download these.

Anyone know if they are any good?

The second cover looks like a Puma in a Salvidor Dali painting. :D

I was able to download the first one at this link:

http://www.megamagzone.com/2007/05/16/v ... books.html

And the second one using this link:

http://www.megamagzone.com/2007/07/06/m ... books.html

I found that with some of the links I had to register to be able to download. The registration wasn't too hard to figure out. I opened a disposable hotmail account for the purpose of registering because I don't trust sites like this with my regular email address. Another thing I found was that if you're using Internet Explorer that a lot of times when you click the download link it often goes to the download page and then instantly loads another page with an advertisement. Whenever I try using Firefox the ad page doesn't load and I'm able to download fine. BTW I can't read the text in those publications but there are some excellent scale drawings in them.

*edit-
On second thought here are direct depositfiles links. They should work better without the need to register or anything:
http://depositfiles.com/en/files/871952
http://depositfiles.com/en/files/1155323

The password for both files is: www.megamagzone.com

kduck:

Thank you for the direct links! :D
I've got both of them now, that's great.

I had tried to register using my throw away yahoo address, but I kept
getting error messages in Russian so I gave up.

It's nice to see a few different photos of the Puma rather than the same handful usually found in books.

Thanks again

No problem Rob. I'm happy to help. If you need direct links for any others let me know the titles and the pages you found them on and I'll see what I can do.

BTW, I'd like to say thanks to ostketten for starting this thread. That is a fabulous site. I've downloaded a number of the armor pubs but I'm really stoked by the uniform books that I've downloaded. I have a very meager 1/6th collection (only 2 figures) and I'm thinking about getting into it a bit more. The books available there make a great reference without spending any money. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the 1/6th gear I've been ordering. I'm working on a Normandy Fallschirmjager and I've already spent $40+ and I've only got about 2/3 of the gear I need. I don't know why I didn't just spend the $50 or so for a boxed figure. I keep telling myself that as a custom figure I'll value it more but I can't help but think I'm throwing money out the window...

My pleasure, and I'm glad you guys are finding it useful. I've downloaded a ton of great stuff there myself, including R.P. Hunnicut's tomes on the Patton Tank, and The History of the American Heavy Tank, both of which are quite pricey in book form.

The only other title I wanted and couldn't download was the russian "FAMO" title found on the following page.

If you have it and can pass it on thank you.
