Small Scale Military Headquarters

Does anyone have a resource with a complete or extensive listing of G Symbols? A website would be great.

G Symbols - Otherwise known as: The Geometric Symbols System instituted by the USN for the Aircraft of the Pacific fleet during WWII.

You've seen one of these symbols on one of the 21st Avengers with the big white arrow painted on it's tail. Other shapes include a hour glass for the USS Essex (Not yet seen on a 21st plane). All aircraft carriers had a shape assigned to them so that the aircraft belonging to them could be easily identified.

I'm looking to know what ships had what shapes assigned to them.

I'm having trouble Googling anything useful. The best I got was a mention of the Essex's and the Yorktown's symbols. Essex is the hourglass as you say and the Yorktown is a long, thin line running diagonally across the stabilizer fin and rudder, but no pics and no idea which way the diagonal runs.

Yeah, I found basically the same. It makes me wonder if most of this has somehow been lost. I doubt this and it is probably is written form and not all in one place.

I hope that I can get something to turn up. Perhaps if there is some language used to talk about this that I don't know about other than what I've already mentioned.

Hmmmm... Anyone else have info?

I have a book that has this information with pictures of the symbols. Give me a day or two to dig it out and see if I can scan it and post it for you.

I have a couple books by Squadron on Naval colors and markings and I am sure one has the carrier symbols

Here is what I found in one of my books. Since the print is too small to read in the scan, I listed the names of the carriers in the order they are in the picture below the images. I do not think this list is comprehensive for all of the carriers, it's just what I have.

Wow, thanks so much! Yes, I'm sure it's not all of them, but better than the nothing I've found everywhere so far. I'll have to look into a few books on this.
