Corsair antenna question

Post by Yoxford » Mon Aug 28, 2006 6:56 am

replacing the antenna on a Corsair F4U-1Cl, and have not been able to find an example of the antenna mounting system.

Does the dual antenna wire that splits from the rudder top have a spring tension device, or is there a spring tension device on the forward cockpit antenna mast. Any information or a close up photo would be greatly appreciated.

Corsair antenna

Ah, you're doing the cannon-equipped Corsair...very cool!

Here are some photos from "F4U Corsair in Detail & Scale, Part 1".

Forward antenna attachment:

Rear antenna attachment:

These photos are from a -1D, I believe at the US Naval Aviation Museum. The spring tension device is on the rear attachment point. However, it looks like the -1D rear attachment is to the top of the vertical stabilizer. The -1C is like the earlier F4U's in that the attachment is to the rudder-top post. (the BBI 1:18 Corsair has this)

I hope this helps.

I have been to three hobby stores and all were sold out of
"F4U Corsair in Detail & Scale, Part 1"
I will have to order that from Squadron.

No problem, happy to help. I wasn't even aware of the spring tensioner until you mentioned it. Then there it was in the book! I'm looking forward to seeing photos of your custom work. :D

Great work! Looks just like the photos! Were'd you get such a small spring, from the inside of a watch?

Nice avatar, too. Looks like this thread has the corner on Corsairs :D

JimBob & Teamski,

Thanks for the kind words. Although I have just joined the forum, I have been visiting this site for a couple of years now, following the conversations and having both of you complement my work means allot.

As for the spring, I was looking for micro springs and during my search, found an old BIC lighter and thought "wonder what size spring makes this work?" yup BIC uses 1/18 scale antenna springs for their lighters.

I have much more to do on the Corsair and will post pictures when done.

Trustt me you guys will be blown away once you see yoxfords F4U. He's turned Marines Dream into a better Corsair then it was when BBI first released it.
