Is there something wrong with that title or is it just me?

Well, if they tasked only specific squadrons to fly 'very' long range missions, it may be applicable.
However, the only short range missions I could imagine being flown in the Pacific would be Combat Air Patrol missions flown over airfields and carriers.
Consequently, I also find that title to be a bit odd. Redundant to say the least.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.

Perhaps there were specially modified Mustangs with extra fuel tanks internally and/or externally, used for special missions? Dunno.
