Michael Wittmann's height

Post by donnieboy » Mon Apr 17, 2006 8:42 pm

Dear Board: please forgive this seemingly strange question, but: Does anyone know precisely how tall Michael Wittmann (the famous S.S. Liebstandarte Tiger tank commander) was? Class? Class? Anyone? Anyone? :?: I Googled my brains out but couldn't find an answer anywhere on the Net. Halp!

This looks to be the closest you'll be able to get without registering with the contributing website. Have some patience, and his record will be provided aparrently. Sorry

Well going from photos I`ve seen of Wittmann I`d say he was if not close to the 6ft mark. He was taller than the rest of his crew. He joined LAH when the height restrictions were Still in place so I`d say close if not 6ft.

average height of a european male during wwii was a hair under 5 foot 7. Given that tank crews tended to be small, the fact that Whitmann was taller than the rest of his crew doesn't mean he would be as much as 6 foot. In all the descriptions i've read of him i've never heard that he was a 'tall man' which, if he was 6 foot, he would be considered.

I would peg him around 5' 9".

Don't forget he would have boots on, which will make him appear a bit taller..
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Michael Wittmann's height

flpickupman, steelbonnet, and Aferg:
Hey, thanks guys, for responding so quickly to my query. That panzerace.net site flpickupman gave me yielded another good site:www.panzermuseum.com. After registering there, I was able to download Wittmann's entire S.S. personnel file. It was all in German, but now I can go through it in detail at my leisure. Judging from pictures I've seen of Michael Wittmann with his tank crew, he seems to be one of the shorter guys, and none of those chaps look very tall. I'd peg him at between 5'7" and 5'9". Thanks again for all your help!
:)
