Tank Treads as Suplemental Armor?

Post by Fritzkrieg » Sat Apr 18, 2009 6:59 am

I've seen a lot of WWII pics of of Panzers and Shermans covered with Tank Tread. Were most of theses examples of, tanks crews suplementing their armor with tread from destroyed enemy vehicles, or a convient way of carrying extra tread, while suplementing armor?

You got it.. They carried the extra treads not only for replacements, and they typically carried them in places where the armor was weak.

I don't ever check on this post. Herre is a Panther track link that I think was on as supplimental armor. The chevrons were not worn at all. So I think that it was hanging on the tank.

BTW they weigh 45 lbs. each.
