Small Scale Military Headquarters

Not my listing, but is this even possible? This strikes me as someone who doesn't really want to sell their item.

I see quite a few listings like that, where it seems the seller is way out of line with reality, especially when you compare it to the completed sales history of an item and there is nothing to support the asking price. Just recently I was pricing wireless Logitech mice and the model I was viewing averaged around $30 except for one guy who was asking $85. Even Target only asks $40 for the same mouse. The seller wasn't in some crazy edge-of-the-world country, unless you regard central NY as such. It made absolutely no sense why he thought he could get that...

...but as a seller told me years ago when I asked him about his pricing, "I know mine are higher, but I still manage to sell them".

They were either high when they typed in the start price, or they are counting on some rich idiot to hit their listing.

It reminds me of my favorite overpriced story:

True story..... Back in the early seventies, I am reading the Sunday times and I see a car add for a "WW2 German half track - $7,500". Location is Nyack, NY, above where I lived, in NYC. So I go up and find a antique car place and sitting there is a NSU Kettengrad. So, I look it over and talking to the guy and said, I liked the Kett but his price was high for me. The guy says:

"There are four Ketts left in the world, two in German museums, one in the Brit Imperial museum and the one sitting in his shop. How do you put a price on something that is one of only four in the world today."

He wanted his price, nothing less. So I go home and do some research (very time consuming before PC's and Goggle). I find the guy lied, there are plenty, including a half dozen here in the U.S. Either he lied or else he had been lied to.

The guy thought he had gold, instead he only had silver. Price should have been around $2,000, which I would have paid gladly. I even had a garage for it.... not easy in an apartment in the Bronx...

Anybody that pays very high prices without checking, is a dope.

I'll stick to 1:18.

I've never understood it, but some listings seem to be 'placeholders' that the seller has no intention to sell, but has listed anyway. Maybe it has something to do with being an 'active' seller where listings count but not actually selling. I've seen the same thing on Amazon, a few items that would sell for $50 or less are listed at hundreds. Makes no sense to me.

A Kettengrad today, can go for $50K up to $150K. Prices have changed in 40 years. Depending on condition.

My first MV was a WC-56 Command Car, bought straight out of French surplus for $4,000. Great condition and I drove it home. Sold it a few years later for $6,500. I saw that CC (not like, but the same one) two years ago fully restored for $45,000. It sold. I was able to follow the CC because I sold the CC to the then President of the International MVPA (Military Vehicle Preservation Association).

My kids were getting big and I needed a cargo truck more than a CC, which was basically a show off show or parade vehicle, so I bought a M-37. I could justify a M-37 but not a CC, when my boys were into bicycle racing with good bikes pushing a $1K, at that time.

However, recently a FM 1/48 CF-18 went for almost $1,000 on auction. But this was a limited edition of only 250.

i think many of these high price listings are simply either hoping to catch a sucker at a time when the high priced listing is the only one on, or they simply park the item at the price and wait (and hope) until the market price catches up to it.

At those prices you could pay a skilled modeller to build a 1/48 B-26 for you that would be far superior to the Armour one and have lots of change left over.

I have noticed that eBay is not a good judge of real value anymore. I used to go there to see what items I had were currently going for. Now I have to search competed listings and see what they actually sold for. There are way too many bloated buy it now’s. I actually can’t imagine why they have such high prices on these items. Obviously they aren’t selling so what’s the point? Are the sellers banking on that one idiot that doesn’t know better? In this economy I can’t imagine there’s too many out there that are willing to pay twice something’s real value. I would think it may take months, even years to sell these items at those prices. That’s if they sell at all.

Hmmm, since I posted about 'economy shipping', the seller cut the shipping cost by more than half. It was over $60 when I posted, now it's $20. Someone's reading this board.....
