Trivia note on that scene from the movie. One of the "Avengers" is a Hellcat. It's the one always seen head on only. Check it out on Youtube...at 42 seconds

I remember the first time I saw the movie and spotted the F6F, being the plane spotting nerd that I am, and thought "What the.....?" I always wondered why they bothered to use the Hellcat. They had enough TBM's to flesh out the scene with creative camera work. Maybe someone was contracted to come up with X number of planes and they had to make a substitution?

Great documentation!
Sounds like the deal with Planes of Fame demanded five planes on set by XX XX date. The directors and set directors probably already had a plan where there were 5 planes in a circle. There were 5 planes in Flight 19 and by God they were going to have all 5. Visually it made it so the first scene was able to sweep past all five planes as the actors ran from one to another, conveniently by-passing the Hellcat. They could only come up with 4 Avengers so the Hellcat was a substitute for number 5. Just enough family resemblance that only the rare laser focused WWII plane geek would notice. You were supposed to be distracted enough by actors, dialog and the sand storm not to.

Cool trivia

I always thought that opening scene was pretty cool... And the end when you see the pilots get off the alien ship as well. Close Encounters is often credited with popularizing the Flight 19 story and its alien/paranormal connections.
However, $2,200 for an MIB 21st Flight 19 Avenger is way too much, even for a 13-year-old model. Still, it’s nice knowing the MIB one buried in my garage somewhere is potentially worth way more than what I paid for it!

You'd think they'd include shipping at that price. instead wanting an extra $64.

Funny, the listing has 8 watchers

Maybe they're just curious to see if anyone's stupid enough to buy it?

It's been lowered to 50% off.
Completed auction for this model highest is $299 plus ship.
I usually see these as the Flight 19 leader, and not the others (how many 5 total?) with the alien crew member . Kinda funny twist they did. That's one I have.
He's got an Eagleston P-47 at the same original price.
I remember seeing a stack of them at Walmart for $25 a piece back in the day.
May not get rich like this guy wants to, but man these still hold some value.

My bad.
I seem to remember each alien having a different look with each plane that had one.
That one's got a red bathrobe.
