Toying with a 1/144 idea

Post by warhawker » Fri Nov 16, 2007 9:11 am

With the news of getting 1/144 dauntless -
viewtopic.php?t=9578&highlight=144+dauntless
and we now have 1/44 zeros and hellcats, I have been toying with the idea of creating either a US or Japanese aircraft carrier to carry them. I would really need some detailed ref. material in order to get the scaling/sizing right plus all of the other 'unknowns' associated with such a project.
Do any of you guys have any info, ideas, starting points, etc. that can point me in the right direction to get this started?

I just did a quick math on trying to create a Japanese Akagi class carrier - 855 feet length would come out to 5.9 feet in 1/144 scale!

Very cool! Even if you just made the flight deck that would kick butt. A Japanese carrier with the big rising sun on the deck would be really cool. 8)

Years ago at my local Hobbytown USA store, there were two 1:144 scale ships on display replicating the battleship USS New Jersey and the aircraftcarrier USS Essex. They were certainly huge and extremely detailed, down to crew figures and everything 8)

Good luck :D

Well, I found a company in HK that does create 1/144 Akagi and Shinano Japanese carriers -

But they do not sell them. Have to use a retailer to get them. Well I found a retailer that does sell them -
http://www.kk-eishindo.co.jp/
after looking on their website under 'Product Information' at the bottom there is a link to the carrier and then after translating Japanese to English it turns out that this massive mastodon which is about 7.9 feet in length comes down to 880,00 yens which is $7,948.69 dollars, plus shipping!
I better get a paper route and start collecting cans!

Naval aviation is not really my area of knowledge but how about one of the US escort carriers. I think they called them "Jeep" carriers and if memory serves me right I think they were about half the size of the Essex class. That might be much more managable as a custom build.

Yeah, escort carriers might be less taxing on your wallet.
