Hi All,
Okay, I'm stumped. The only difference I can see between the regular AAV7A1 and the Special Edition version is the lip on the front of the vehicle. What exactly is it because I cant find any information on it on the web?

That piece is a bowplane of sorts, extended. Designed to keep the nose from dipping in heavy surf. The new amphibious assault vehicle, the "EFV" (Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle) the future replacement for the AAVP7 series, has a HUGE bowplane and is capable of gliding across the water much faster that the amtracks.

Hello Klaus,
Many thanks for the explanation. At first I thought it was some sort of shield but it didnt make sense cause some forward areas would've still been exposed to enemy direct fire weaponry.

I wonder why Dragon keeps doing crap like this???
Why can't they just do a "Special version" with a different paint scheme or something more obvious???

Klaus, your right on the money about the Bow Plane... one thing to consider about the AAV is the fact that it's more of a personnel carrier and by no means an Infantry Fighting Vehicle though recent events (Iraq) forced us to be employed in that manner, and it came at a price. Interesting note: with the gradual itro of the EFV the current AAV's are not slated for retirement just yet, one plan I heard was to turn them over to the Combat Engineers and make them organic to those units since they use them quite a bit in their doctrine...
