German SP Gun.....???
Can anybody identify this piece..?? The seller said he thought it was a "K18" but that was all he could tell me. Looks too big for an 88mm, and I figure maybe 150mm or larger. It is 1/72 scale and I got this on Ebay for $5 delivered, and the guy said he thought it was made by Dragon, but he was not certain about that. Any info is appreciated, thanks.

Sturer Emil
On September 9th, 1938, Henschel began building the VK3001(H), which was based on their DW II prototype and used dry pin tracks. Early in 1940, the first trials took place and by March 1941, the first VK3001(H) was ready. Two months later it was decided to abandon all development, because the VK3601(H) carried a better gun. (A 7.5cm KwK L/24 or 10.5cm KwK L/28 was planned for the VK3001(H)). Nevertheless, 4 chassis were completed and twelve turrets had been built by Krupp with the 7.5cm KwK L/24, which were later used in fortifications.
In mid 1941, the Waffenamt (Ordnance Department) decided to use 2 chassis of the VK 3001(H) to mount the Rheinmetall 12.8cm K L/61, which was based on the 12.8cm Flak. The hull had to be lengthened to fit the huge gun and an eighth roadwheel was added.
In August, the first "Versuchsjäger 3001" was completed and brought to the Eastern front. The troops were inspired by its looks and capabilities, and it came to be called "Sturer Emil". One of the vehicles was captured intact late in 1943.

Yeah, it was actually part of of a small lot (5 total) of Dragon T-34's a Dragon 251 halftrack, and this thing in the pic, I brought the whole lot home for $19.25, they were all loose, but still not a bad deal at all. Lightning...thanks for all the great info!! A "Sturer Emil" 128mm eh?? Well, is it an artillery piece or an anti-tank piece?? It's really quite a nice liitle model, my only complaint is that the gun is fixed and will not elevate or depress, but for 5 bucks who's complainingWow, $5 including shipping is a fantastic price. Great find.

Role?
While it could be used as an SP gun, more and more of the German SP guns were actually used as tank destoyers later in the war to supplement the panzerwaffe. If you read Panzer Aces, there's a discussion on Albert Ernst, who commanded a Hummel howitzer. His crew as well as the accompanying Hummels in his platoon were routinely used as a fire brigade to stop advancing Russian armor or lead a local counterattack to regain important positions.
