Anybody still collecting Axis and Allies Minitures?

Post by krieglok » Tue Jul 11, 2006 12:56 pm

My son and I have have started collecting the A&A miniatures enmass. I was wondering if there is a place to go where we can swap some of the "doubles" we have. We are new to the game so we were also wondering if players use more than one of the same type of piece when playing.

Yea, I have ton of them. To anwser your other question, go to

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aa/welcome

You go to their community section and on to their forums. They should have a A&A Minis section and then a Trade area.

Good luck.

Count me in!! I have a ton of'em too. I do use multiples of the same unit. It's easier to pull off when you build an army that's more than 100 points as some are kind of pricey to use - Tiger I, Nashorn, SS Panther. You can have 4 Shermans, 5 Elite Pnzr IVDs, and 5 Pnzr IIIs are 65 points. The sky's the limit on what you want to do with the game. I've even made a 3D terrain set up with 3" hexes. It's modeled like AH's BattleCry game.

Go to the AH forums like Hanomag posted or look for online dealers that will buy/trade with you. Gamerocket.com and Dragonjustice.com to name a couple.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only nut that buys/plays this game. I know that 'Ski is a big fan.

You don't have to be a nut to buy this game Curt. You just have to be very very cool. 8)

Thanks for justifying my addiction. My wife thinks were nuts. We are still figuring the actual game out, but collecting the pieces in the meantime is just as interesting. Thanks for the leads on the selling and swapping of pieces. We have a few starter sets and have been picking up the other sets as we find them. The Contested Skys version seems to most common, with the Eastern Front boosters being the hardest to find.

krieglok,

Do you buy single boosters? If so, buy a case online. In stores, they charge $14.99 and if you buy a case of 12 you can get them for about $8.50 per booster which is much more worth it.

collectandsave.com
gameoutfitter.com
gatheringground.com

GG has the Eastern Front for $99.00 per case of 12. That's like buy 1, get one free on the boosters.

Happy shopping!!

I like Game Outfitter myself (as mentioned above). You can get pretty good prices and they sell half cases. I find that to work well enough for me. Good luck to you.

Wow, thanks for the information. I have been picking the boosters up from a local card shop for $12 each and I thought I was getting a deal. Thanks again.

I have to admit we are still in the building stage. We bought a couple cases of boosters from the on line dealer mentioned above and have been sorting out the doubles. My son has a weak spot for anything Japanese or Russian and I like pretty much any of the vehicles. We both have our seperate collections of both sides that grow on a daily basis. Pretty addicting...

Last night a friend and I played the Assault scenario - he was defending with 80 points and I was attacking with 120 points. He chose the Urban Combat map and set up on the side of the map that didn't have the stream. He put the objective in the woods just in front of the 1 hill hex.

I had -
Elite Pnzr IV x2
Brumbar
SS Pnzr Grenadier x2
Wehr Sniper
BMW x2
Flak 38
SS Hauptsturm Furher
Grizzled Vetern x2

He used -
Commisar x2
ZIS AT gun x4
Bofors
Mosin-Nagant x7
Sniper

He put half of his forces in the big city and the other half close to the objective. The Bofors was placed in the wooded area away from the big city. I came down the road thru the tree lines.

It was tricky dodging those ZIS guns in the city with my 3 defence Pnzr IVs!! And that Bofors had a fire lane down several of the tree lines. That could've been a night mare as well.

I ended up winning and only lost 1 BMW and my Hauptsturm furher - 12 points/10% of army total. He lost 51 points of his 80 - 50% casualities. I killed all of his troops except for a Commisar, ZIS, and 3 Mosins that were near the objective - 2 Mosins were disrupted. Most of my stuff was in that last tree line. Once the sniper and Bofors were gone it was on.

I love this game!! We're playing again this Saturday - I'm the Japanese and he's the British. This should be a blast as I dance with my Japanese armor.

How long did it take to play the scenario you described? We are still working with the quick start rules. How do you come up with the starting point value for the game? I know each piece is worth a set number of points, but I thought both sides were limited to 100pts each. Pardon my newbieness.

krieglok,

We use the Advanced Rules. If I remember correctly, the Quick Start rules just shows you how to fire at a stationary target. The Advanced Rules are where it's at. I'm not sure why they call them "advacned" because they ARE the rules. They're not hard either - very simple.

As for the points, you use 100 points for the "basic" scenario. We did the Assault scenario that's in the Advanced rulebook. The defender gets 80 points, picks the map and the side that they set up on, they set up first, can set up on any hex that is on their side of the map, and can place the objective ANYWHERE they want so as long as it is NOT on their edge of the map or any hex that is adjacent to a half hex. The attacker gets 120 points and has to follow the "up to five hexes in" set up rule.

We use a 3D map that I made. If you've ever played or heard of Memoir '44 or Battle Cry, it's based on that - a blank map with hexes that you put on to match the chosen map from the rule book. It's 4' x 2 1/2'. Set up time is about 10-15 minutes for the 3D map. We both had our armies made up prior to playing last night - I had a 3 day notice as to what we were playing and the sides we'd use.

Once the map was set up, it took about 1 1/2 hours to play. A battle is supposed to take about an hour to complete but we usually get side tracked and chat about other things before and during the game - nice and casual.

Cool. Can you post a photo of the 3D map? I would be interested in making one myself. Once we get rolling on the game, we will pick up the advanced rules. My son is only 7 but he seems to grasp it once we get going...

I don't have a digital camera to post pictures here but I'll try to get one of those disposible cameras and get the pics on disk and try that.

I can give you the instructions on what I did if you want.

You're son's 7? That's cool. I was guessing a little older. Teach'em while they're young.
