been looking at this off and on and have been toying with the idea of using it with 1/72 planes. P class Zeppelins were in common use during WWI and were about 540 feet long, or 7 1/2 feet in 1/72. This model Hindenburg is 5 1/2 feet long. So, i thought i could cut it, and add a 2 foot section which would simulate part of the airship being on fire, so it would be easy to blend into the actual model.
The diameter is almost spot on for 1/72. I'd have to scratch build a front gondola but the rear wouldn't be needed as it would be consumed by 'fire'. I'd have to remove all the little engines and do-dads on the Hindenburg too.
So a bit of work but when i'm done it would be a reasonable looking and pretty close to 1/72 scale zeppelin airship on fire. It would not perfect in shape nor details but i think it would have the look of the thing and perhaps the best bet for getting a 1/72 zeppelin. Kind of a pricey piece to buy but i have a line on one that's somewhat cheaper.
I could also just use it as is (ie not on fire) and scratch build 2 gondolas but it would be 2 feet too short. Here is a Tangmere museum display using this model with a couple of 1/72 fighters and at a glance it doesn't look too bad.
