First Look At An Easy model 1:48th Scale P-40

Post by Epap » Thu Jan 23, 2014 12:19 pm

I bought an Easy Model P-40N from a low ball Chinese vendor just to confirm my suspicions about this new scale for the EM line. And my suspicions were confirmed. I had hoped that EM would realize that going from the 1:72nd to the 1:48th scale offered an opportunity to add some more detail and make the models more appealing....but I was wrong. The P-40 looks exactly like a scaled up 1:72nd scale EM model, with no attempt to add stenciling, improve the cockpit, mark the fuel caps.....nothing. Indeed, the landing gear comes in white plastic, the white lines that should go along the upper and lower portions of the wings are missing and, to top it off, there are a few smudges to be dealt with. So abandon hope, 1:48th scale fans, Easy Model has missed the boat on this one----at least judging by my P-40.

My local Hobby Town USA store has the 1:48 scale Easy Model P-51D and P-47. I looked them over and am simply not that impressed. Cockpits are far too spartan - one can easily see details like instruments and controls in 1:48 - and they are practically not there on the EM planes. While I saw no issues with the markings like misalignment or smudges, the planes looked looked toy-like overall. Just something with the shine on them... The fact that are no moving parts other than the prop is also discouraging. Guess I've just been spoiled by some of the excellent (though more pricey) 1:48 diecast versions of both the P-51 and P-47 to not warrant getting something in plastic...

I am curious about the 1:72 scale P-61 shown on the boxes of these 1:48 planes. I'd like to know when that will show up 8)
