Camparing scales (FOV, K&C, CS, etc)

Post by dweigum » Sat Sep 01, 2012 3:59 am

There was a thread that showed the comparisons between 1/30 and 1/32 scale tanks, but I can't seem to find it. I am wondering if there is a huge difference between the 2 and can they be mixed and matched in a diorama?

Thanks

1/32 is associated with 54mm, while 1/30 is 60mm. Britains and Conte are 1/32, while K&C is 1/30. (FOV figures are probably closer to 1/35.) Mixing and matching scales are up to the eye of the beholder. Purists will say you cannot. Generally speaking I think you can match if you keep the scales separate or use pieces that are totally different so the person viewing does not have any perspective.
Michigan Toy Soldier in the past had photos of the differences of scales to give you an idea. Toysoldierclub.com also has an article explaining and demonstrating the differences.

Thanks ketelone, but I was thinking more in the lines of the vehicles. I have purchased K&C figures and they certainly are a lot bigger than the FOV figures. To put them together in a diorama will certainly take some imagination. I also have a couple of Britains and they are closer to the K&C. The detail of the K&C is really amazing and I would like to stick with them. They have a few vehicles that are not made by FOV and if the vehicles are as disproportionate as the figures, then that would not work. I am hoping someone can confirm or disprove this.

You are correct. Many of the K&C vehicles are significantly larger. There are are some older K&C vehicles which are closer to 1/32. Early Panzers are closer to 1/32. K&C trucks, Jeeps, Kubelwagons and the majority of their armor are just too big. You could get away with the Italian and French armor because there's nothing to compare it to. Quite some time ago, K&C had some 'diorama' or vignette pieces, which you can still find, which were an abandoned/partially destroyed Panzer, Hanamog and also a Kubelagon with a dead draped German soldier lying next to the vehicle, which you could use.
Again, it's all in the eye of the beholder. Some people have a keen eye for the difference in scales. My children certainly do because they will tell me if something looks strange or odd. To some the K&C Austins and the new Fiats would work. Others might say they look wrong... Do what you want. It's your diorama or collection!

Oh by the way, CS can sometimes dwarf K&C...

Well, if you leave out the figures that would help a bit, plus having your differently-scaled models not be of the same type as each other would also work as said. Just remember, though, that a 1/32 Hetzer won't help with a 1/30 Marder as they sit on the same chassis - thus making them not really different.
