reels on Flak gun....

Ok does anyone know what the reels on all 4 fenders were for? Just wondered THANKS

Remember that FLAK guns only fired over their own sights in direct fire (AT gun mode). For proper FLAK they were positioned in batteries, with fire control equipment to assess the planes' direction, height, speed, etc. The guns were cabled to the fire control, the pointers on the side of the gun mount moved an arrow to a particular setting (elevation or traverse) the gunner moved the gun until his pointer matched the pointer setting from the director, then all the battery's guns wouild be firing into a box area, with the shells (hopefully) bursting near the target plane to cause damage. That's why so much cable was carried.

I believe there also was a fuse setting machine that one of the gun crew inserted the "nose" of the round into and it set the altitude on the proximity fuse. It is located on the left side of the gun itself...
