momogram 1/32 models

Post by Bandit » Tue May 26, 2009 8:15 am

Hi, Does anyone know if the new and even the older momogram 1/32 military models are 1/32 scale which can be put with FOV and 21st century models and can be displayed in the same showcase?
I was thinking some may be smaller in scale. Hows the detail on these Kits? I also think newray has 1/32 scale, What everyone think of these?
I'm trying to get some ideas about my 1/32 stuff which I started collecting.
Maybe I'll have to try to Built kits again, Thanks, Bandit

I recently picked up a Sd.Kfz 232 on ebay, and comparing the figures to those which came with my 21st armor they are close enough to call it even.

I would hope all the others in the series are scaled correctly, but I've heard rumors some were a bit off (like 1/35 or 1/30).

Mine is in one of the newer(?) white boxes with the photo rather than a painting of the model.

I have quite a few of the original Monogram 1/32 kits and the figures are close enough to go well with the 21st figures. They're too small for Conte or San Diego Toy Soldier though. They will also go nicely with painted Airfix. The vehicles however go well woth 21st or FOV.

Thanks for the info on these models. Guess I'll try to get a couple and see how good they are to put together. It's been over 20 years since I built a model.

Same here. I started again to continue my 1/32 and have managed to find a few nice pieces that 21st would never had made most likely.

Just don't make the mistake I made and make sure when airbrushing you secure the model very well to its stand - the air pressure from my brush blew my P-38 off and onto the garage floor.

Fortunately all it did was knock one boom off and only needed reattachment. I just about pooped my pants when it happened.

Most of the later Monograms are 1/32nd. It is the early period stuff from the late 50's to early 60's stuff that is closer to 1/35. These would include the M48, Weasel, M3 halftrack and the, modern cargo truck.

Surprise! The 232 I got still contains the Armor Series brochure. The models listed are:

Us Personnel Carrier (the standard halftrack)
2½ ton truck (M-34)
Weasel M-29C
Jeep w/37mm gun
Armored Halftrack (w/quad)
set of 18 infantry figures - in action poses, no less!

The above are all U.S. obviously, and noted as 1/35. This page is ©1973.

on the reverse is one tank in, again, 1/35:

Patton tank

The remainder are all in glorious 1/32:
Pz.Kpfw.IV w/ optional damaged schurzen
Flakpanzer
Stug IV w/optional schurzen
Panzerjager IV w/zimmerit
Sturmpanzer w/zimmerit
M3 Grant
M3 Lee

Strangely, there is no mention of my model or stuff like the Calliope Sherman, but if most of these can be made easily obtainable through reissue they'd make great conversion fodder. My 232 came with the Paine diorama sheet so if I find another I can convert it to a 263 communications car, nevermind having one in DAK and one in Polish campaign colors. I paid $30 for it, which I deem acceptable given the going price of kits these days. Plus, it's 36 years old!!!

Monogram kits

Post by PanzerArm » Wed May 27, 2009 6:54 pm

I have quite a few of these kits that I've picked up off ebay as of late, mainly for the same reason as the rest of you, lack of variety out there from the usual sources of 1/32. I have the following kits:

-M4 Sherman Hedgehog (1 built w/o planks or sandbags and 1 unassembled)

-M4 Sherman Calliope (unassembled)

-M8 Greyhound (unassembled)

-M20 Scout Car (unassembled)

-Sdkfz 232/4 Armored Car (built)

-Ostwind (1 built and one unassembled)

-Wirbelwind (unassembled)

-Jagdpanzer IV (unassembled)

-Stug IV (unassembled)

-Panzer IV (chopped up and used in a kitbash  )

The ones I have put together I like a lot, I even had one painted for me (the ostwind) and it is my favorite of all the german AA I own. They seem to be smaller than FOV or 21st as a general rule. I have assembled the sherman and panzer IV and they were noticably smaller than their counterparts, but not so much as 1/35. I'd put Monogram somewhere between FOV and 1/35.

I'm also curious to see if anyone here has assembled any airfix 1/32. I have the 1/32 sdkfz 250 and Monty's Humber, both unassembled, and I just wanted to see what anyone here thinks of them. I also want to get the airfix Crusader kit and then maybe the 1/32 airfix cromwell toy. Any opinions on these?

Is your Airfix 250 Rommel's car? I have that one myself but its low on my to-build list as I have a few planes to bang out - finishing a P-38 and then either my BF110 or Me163 next. Although I don't as a rule collect Allied armor, I was sorely tempted by the Desert Rats set with the Crusader.

Yep, that's the one. It's is also pretty low on my to-do list. I kind of bought all these kits as rainy day builds to make when I'm all out of 21st and FOV stuff to kit bash/customize. I also bought them as emergency kit-bash fodder for those few pieces that it's actually easier for me to transplant than make from scratch. I really want that crusader next, it's been tempting me for a while, but I've never been able to find it for a price I was willing to pay. I think it would make a nice compliment to the FOV Grant, and add some strength to my British ranks (espeicially since I have tons of newly painted DAK tanks from Cabe :D )

Revell is starting to release old 1/32 Monogram armor kits for about $20 a kit.... Not bad. I've been suceesful in finding original Monogram kits at toy and plastic kit shows for $10-$15. I find they fit well with FOV and 21st vehicles.

I've purchased some of the Airfix 1/32 vehicles and they're slightly small and not really good kits. They have a tendency to have pieces not fit very well. Often you have to use 'filler' to close the gaps.

Are these similar to the mammogram line of anatomically correct models?

i had all of these in the 70's with the Sheppard Paine "diorama tips" small color um....pamphlets?

I left them all at a friend's house in a trade that I am sure was a bad one as I do not remember what I traded for. I do remember that he ended them all with fireworks and pellet guns along with my revell battleships

And yes I had the Mamogram line too, they were reviewed on Mamorama.com

On my desk, spread before me, are the Paine sheets for the B-17, B-24, B-25, B-29, Sherman M4A3 Hedgecutter, and Sherman T-34 Calliope. The Shermans and the 17 are all ©1975, the 24 ©1976, with the 25 and 29 ©1977.

If anyone would like pics I can try to wrestle the camera away from my wife, but give me a day as all told its 24 pages to shoot and get the lighting right so they're legible. My PC dungeon isn't the best for photography.

The Hedgecutter is most likely the most useful of the bunch to folks here as the large bombers don't exist except in 1/72 or smaller for the most part. The Calliope diorama mostly tells how to modify the suspension to be correct and paint figures.

I'm afraid armor-wise all I have are the 2 Shermans and the German 8-wheeler, which are already in color at that site. I did notice all the bomber links are dead, though.

I have been chomping at the bit to get one of these kits recently. When I remember they were 1:32 I tried to buy a few, either half built, opened or mint..off of ebay but they alway ended up outbidding me to the tune of 40-80 bucks final price.

I really wanna get my hands on a panzerspawagon or the Jagdpanzer and paint em up for someone's collection. So If anyone has a kit they have built, want to build and send or have me build let me know and we can work out a price for the painting/weathering job.
I do have a couple of projects I am currently working on. But I am in a dead zone work wise. My client for art told me not to invoice for anything the next 3 weeks (long yet boring story, sure my landlord will love it). This came down the pipe rather unexpectedly, like one day I was to get $975 paycheck, then was notified that not only was I not getting that but to hold off on expecting or invoicing for the next 3 weeks and that was a week ago. So you can imagine (especially since I had $9 at the time along with summertime electric bills in Texas) That I am in full sell off/accept commission mode. I have a painting that Popeye needs done which I am going to try and squeeze in here over the next 3 weeks in-between paying gigs (if I get any) and a couple of customs that I am finishing up. one is just to finish painting face of a crew fig and add radio wire to headset for a 1:16 jagdpather the other is a zimm + paint job on panther 1:32)
So if anyone wants to have one of those kits done I will have a bunch of free time here for a good while. That is why my treasured display case is one sale in the BST forum (and CL and myspace) and I will be adding it to Ebay tomorrow. I do have decals aplenty and paint (well currently anyway) to do the job for a flat fee without any surprises other than paying to ship it back when I am done (what 5.... bucks?) also have pigments washes ect. I guess the only area I am hurting filters as I managed to spill 2 of the most commonly used MIG filter bottles in the bunch (ouch$$$) but filters are not the most necessary step in the modeling process. Sometimes I think they darked my repaints too much anyway

I am working on a side project right now, a 21stC stug IV with waffle pattern zimm added and am trying to gage the desire for it before I spend much more time on it instead of something that could be making the money. Anyone interested in that? Also a Stug IV with partial shurzen (front) and hasty green camo

My local hobby shop had one of the Shermans with the sandbags piled up all over the hull front. It looked interesting but I didn't bite.

yeah thats the hedgehog, from what I can tell it is the first re-release by Revell of the old Monogram molds. Talking to the guy at Hobbytown who is the resident old modeler, he said it as scale flaws

not bad though at $20 for the kit

A guy in the store who builds and enters models into competitions was saying how building the kit required lots of extra work since most of the joints didn't line up properly among other problems. I guess that's what you get with vintage molds.

Right. The 1972 P-38 I just built had some alignment issues. To have it as a hanging model I wanted the gear doors shut, but they had large gaps along the edges as they were molded for the open position. Also, one of the boom intake assemblies is noticeably behind the other one. This one took a good deal of putty.
