Walmart 's interesting wave of unmarked 1/2 price motorworks

Post by Cabe » Wed Jul 02, 2008 3:23 am

I have noticed lately that if you go to the clearance section of walmart, there is usually at least 1 motorworks on sale for 7-9 dollars.
I was in one walmart the other day and saw the DAK opel blitz truck for $9 and next to it was another DAK truck for $7???
mind you these are the boxed unassembled uh...model kit versions, but full versions nonetheless.
I passed on them with the chance they would be there when I was a bit better off. A few days later I returned after a paycheck ad they were there, along with the grau rear tracked version for $7. So I grabbed a DAK and the grau and happily went home with my savings of $34 (the cost at my local hobbytown per 21stC vehicle is $24, even for the trucks. So $14 instead of $48)

Tonight I was in another walmart buying groceries and since I had not been there before, i hit the clearance isle and no luck, so I swung by the actual toy isle that had the 21st C and there was the usual 38t's, figures and a few play sets and the 1:72 tanks and 1:32 planes, but smack in the middle were 2 boxed model kit grau PZ IV's (short barrel). Both were priced at the typical $14, and I was surprised to see them there as I have not seen the boxed motorworks tanks in the need-to-assemble for except on ebay for almost a year.
So, once again i figured I would come back when I had more $$ because they are hard to find these days in my area and like to do my re-paints. So a few more pz IV's would be great. Well before I did and I don't know why I did, I swiped them under the price check on the pole right behind me......beep...$7!
Well that's all it took, both were in my cart with the tags saying $14.95 but the bar codes saying $7 No waiting on those they came home with me.
So now I am going to be hitting a few more local walmarts looking for the motorworks boxed kits and I think iw ill be seeing more of the same. They are clearing these out even if the price isn't properly marked or if they have not been moved to the clearance aisle yet

Let me know if you happen to have the happen to you, report back if you can. i didn't try swiping the planes, but i did the 38t's and they came up the correct $14.

All in all, this week I spent $28 on 4 21st C vehicles....not too shabby

WM's around here ahd the Motorworks clearance after the first of the year when they eliminated the model section. I picked up a Priest, Dak Truck, Long tom, and a couple Shermans with Dozer Blade. All were in the $7-$10 range depending on store

Dang, I'd sure like to pickup a few of those Opel trucks. They're all I have, since no one will make an American truck. I really like the kit form, it was fun to customize as I assembled. I'll check my WM here, but I doubt I'll find anything.

Nothing here. Haven't seen any Motorworks Branded vehicles of any kind in over a year or so.

I haven't seen any of these in almost a year. I think sometimes WM pulls some dusty cases out of the IJ Ark warehouse and ships them out to the stores. I think this is what you are seeing Cabe.

The motorworks models are four or five years old now. The more recent models were done in the green 21C box.

Frequently Walmart will just run out of shelf space and stuff not selling will be sent to the back room. It may sit there for years. Then somebody notices it when cleaning out an area and it gets moved back to the shelves. I have seen it happen several times. Sometimes it comes back at a reduced price and sometimes not. You will see this especially when they are closing an older store and moving to a new location since they are not allowed to move the really old stock.

Today I was at WM and saw a m24 chaffee tank kit with the tiger camo for 5.00. I didn't buy it though. I wish I could find one of those pz IVs for a DAK repaint.

FYI: The enclosed M24 does not have the paint scheme shown on the box. Inside is a "watermark" paint scheme like the S4 (?) Sherman.
