I picked mine up at MTS yesterday afternoon. Wow--I am certainly impressed. If they can keep cranking things out like this, I may be tempted to give up on the big guys.

1:32 Dauntless

Post by lightning2000 » Fri Aug 08, 2008 11:30 am

Hi,
Thanks for your order Cpl Slade. You should have the plane shortly.
This is the first time we're handling BBI products, but I was nevertheless impressed by the looks of the plane. The aircraft comes in a window pane box with its wings removed, just like the 21st Century Toys packaging. The figures looked good and sales have certainly been brisk. Very encouraging from our standpoint since we're also going to handle their upcoming Wildcat and 1:18 Messerschmitt.

They're priced a bit higher than comparable 21st Century Toys aircraft, but there's not much we can do about that. Sometimes, you get what you pay for and this one looks like a winner, plus I dont think there are any other 1:32 Dauntlesses available.

Hobbymaster makes a 32nd scale Dauntless, but those sell in the 150 dollar range. Nice, but pricey.

Lightning2000, the pictures you have of the upcoming 32nd scale BBI F4F Wildcat, are those pictures of the actual BBI model? If so, it looks awesome!

BBI Wildcat

Post by lightning2000 » Fri Aug 08, 2008 7:02 pm

Hi Sabrefan,
Yes, they're the actual images of the upcoming Wildcat supplied by the distributor. I only wish they had more images of the Dauntless as well. We expect the Wildcat will sell equally well when it comes out. I think its still on track for an October takeoff.

What no working dive flaps/breaks?

To me, that is on piece of detail that should have been included.
If anything they should have included no functional dive flaps in the open position much like the plug and play landing gear of there F-4.

I was just getting stoked about 1/32. Bummer...I was going to hang it in the diving position.

I have to agree with you there. To me, the model should have working dive flaps. After all, this is one feature that the Dauntless is known for. The Hobbymaster model has working dive flaps, but of course that model cost big bucks. :(

I know it, also has removable engine cowls, to bad it cost so much.

VMF, I am really surprised that the BBI Dauntless does not have working dive brakes. I just really thought it would, and it seems kind of strange to me that it does not have them. Still a nice looking model, and I am really looking forward to the Wildcat model.

I have held off on preordering the Dauntless, as difficult as it was for me. I really like the F-4 but was a little put off by the price. OK, quite a bit put off.

For a 1/32 plane at 1/18 prices, I really think this thing should have working dive flaps. If 21C can do flaps on their five year old craptacular P-40 surely BBI could do this on the Dauntless.

Don't get me wrong, I will buy one of these. I do think if BBI wants to crack the market they have to do better than this for a 125% etailer price increase. I know costs have gone up across the board, but this is awfully steep with no corresponding jump in quality. And this increase isn't like the 1/18 Panther inflation where we are comparing '02 vs. '08 prices. :?

I kinda agree, its a beautiful model but at the price point I thought we would be getting moving parts and such. I believe 21st probably could do just as good. 8)

As much as I like the plane, I have to agree with the last few posts. Are we getting spoiled by quality at a low price from 21C? I don't know. But my main bother with BBI is their lack of (and slow release of) repaints and strange choices for their initial paint schemes. Both the Dauntless and the Wildcat were important early war planes, and yet each scheme is from 1944. Where's the Midway schemes? Or the more colourful Coral Sea schemes? I would love to have them with the red and white rudders...

I haven't decided if I'm going to buy the new SBD or F4F because they're around $40-$45 while 21st Century 1/32 planes are $15 at Wal-Mart (the last I checked).

Also, if I do buy the new BBI planes, I'm glad there are less moving flaps, rudders, etc. because most of the flaps on my BBI and 21st Century planes flop anyway (I can't stand the folding wingtips on my BBI F-4J). I just wish with few less moving flaps, BBI would have lowered the price.

Thank you for your order light.inf.scout and to the rest of you good folks out there!

http://store.foxholetoys.com/1scbbielfoww6.html

First off, for those who have not yet picked up one of these beauties, we at FoxholeToys.com are very, very impressed!!! Despite the non-working surfaces :( this aircraft leaves you feeling it was well worth the coin! We can't take our eyes away from it - it's such a nice looking naval warbird.

The figures are, as always, excellent...detail, detail, detail. The 3 removable bombs (not connected to pylons) & 'optional' closed rear canopy are fantastic additions. The paint & weathering is superb! And displayed with the Japanes Zeros looks way cool!!! :)

The Wildcat will be the perfect companion to the Dauntless in November.

Just got home to find this came today. Awesome, model. It is small and I can see the reason for many of you griping about the price given the size of the model, but it is very much worth it. Also, if you consider the price of the Hobbymaster 1:32 Dauntless, this is a steal. It has better quality than anything 21c has put out. It is sturdier in construction, has a great paint job with very hardly any flaws, and tons and tons of detail 8)

I'm not too wild about the "half" gunner figure, but as I plan to display the plane with the gunner in the ready position, it doesn't trouble me too greatly. Otherwise, its another great 1:32 model from BBI!

I'll get some pics up eventually

The quality and detail of the paint sachems maybe nice, but not havening some movable control surfaces, ie dive breaks is an insult that’s like having a F-14 that wings don’t swing in the swept position. Btw The high price of hobby masters SBD is manly due in fact that it is made from die cast not plastic. Attention to detail....

I am just bummed out I was hopeing to add this to my collection.

I guess I will have to wait for my 1/18th SBD..And with movable control surfaces. Its only a few dollars more. JASON WHERE ARE YOU??????????????????????

Funny how the discussion for the BBI SBD reads almost exactly the same as the earlier one about the BBI F-4. There is no reason why any of you cannot add it to your collection if you want it so badly... Just save the money, get it and stop being your own roadblocks in this case. If you don't want it, then end of story

Got mine yesterday. Wow, what a beauty. I have always like the lines of the SBD, and BBI really captured them nicely. Looking forward to the Wildcat!
