Desert Tank Question

Post by Windspruce » Wed Dec 15, 2004 9:20 am

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the canvas is on the front of the tank and what it is called?

Given the modesty of the Brits I was thinking it may offer the tank crew some privacy while assuming a squatting position - apparently there aren't any bushes in the desert.

Desert Churchill

Hi,
Just a guess, but I'd wager it was used to block some of the sand from being kicked up by the tracks while the tank was in motion.

Lightning is correct. Something about the Churchill's configuration caused the engine to kick dust forward beneath the tank which blinded the crew. The skirt was to block that dust.

Thanks Lightning2000 and Jagdplastic. That makes sense that sand kicked up would limit the drivers visibility especially considering the front design of the Churchill.
