The harsh reality: FOV is dead

Post by ketelone » Sun May 01, 2016 4:58 pm

I went to my local Hobby Town USA today. Their FOV section was almost depleted and everything was 25% off. Depressing.
It wasn't too long ago we were all enjoying lots of options from FOV, 21st Century... It looks like it's going to have to be models. Believe me, I acknowledge the end was quite some time ago but it's still sad.
To add insult to injury, my favorite toy soldier store is closing.

It's a shame both 21st and Fov both stopped making 1/32. It is hard to believe that there is no other company out there that wants to start 1/32 up again. When I look at E-bay, I see a lot of selling and bidding of 1/32 tanks and vehicles by both companies. Goes to show there is a market for 1/32 military. Maybe 3D printing will one day help make a comeback of 1/32 military items again.

That's awesome your Hobbytown had FOV products - mine does as well, but it was always very limited, like just the 1/700 scale ships and never any armor. We've known Unimax was on a downward slope for a while, though. The way the quality on the 32x releases dropped in quality, no new items, the fact that they left mass retail and all did not bode well.

That's what I've been resorting to as of late, building both 1/32 and 1/35 scale models... It has led to some interesting additions to my collection from a Panzer II tank a few months ago to a Mig-21, Type XXIII U-boot, and soon another couple vehicles. I've also picked up some of the New Ray 1/32 helicopters and plan to do a rebuild/repaint to their 1/32 scale AH-64 Apache to bring it up to speed.

Plastic, the store is closing its doors not because of poor sales but because the owner wants to retire. The store is Toy Soldier Shoppe. It's located in the Milwaukee area. It carries (carried) K&C, Britains, John Jenkins, First Legion, historically, ONTS, Frontline, Field of Conflict, Figarti....
One can see the offerings of various manufacturers on line but I like to see the actual product in person. I really enjoyed going to the store and checking out the offerings. Now all I have will be the limited shows that are annual such as the Toy Soldier Show in September at the Woodfield Hyatt.
