What is a mock up turret?

Hi

Dragon makes in 1/72 a Maus super heavy tank with mock up turret.
I saw the pictures of it online and see that the turret does not have a barrel and is open like a crate.
What was the purpose of that tank?

Since this was in development no turret had yet been produced. A weighted 'mock' turret was placed on top of the hull for testing, simulating a real turret.
