1/48 Huey Review

Post by Der Kommandant » Thu Jan 01, 2009 7:28 pm

Acquired 12/31/08, Hong Kong time, during vacation. :)
Anyhow, since Unimax is an HK company, a majority of department stores carry their items; enthusiast edition Bradleys, Panthers, Flakpanzers, even an Elefant. They all sell at full MSRP: 48-50 US dolllars. Relatively inexpensive, since one doesn't pay for shipping. Occasionally they also carry helicopters.
I was at one such department store's "toy" area when I spotted a box; within the box were two Hueys being pulled out. Bought it, studied it.

First thing one notices is the small size; the UH-1 is smaller than a Blackhawk. The second thing is the open cabin door with gunner; traditional FoV zombies with his bendy M-60.

Highs: Excellent paint-very even, although without weathering to speak of. Rotors-well cast, spins smoothly. Cockpit-well molded pilots, glass left half-open.

Lows: Door-don't close, flimsy. Door gunner: mediocre at best, fixed pose, cemented. Gun mount-rough M60, ammo belt looks wrong; can be fixed with hot water. If one is risking, the gunner along with his mount may be removed. Affilation-the helo is not attached to any unit; display base says "Vietnam 1968;" wouldn't hurt for anyone to slap on an air-cav badge on the nose. Price-for the money, I would expect a squad inside? Or some dio props? Because for 50 dollars this bird isn't exactly worth every penny.

Overall: acceptable in general. One sees a marked improvement over the generation one blackhawk from FoV; the quality of the product has improved. But with the cost, it remains for an enthusiast to purchase. For everyone else, get the Blackhawk from TRU.

I'll give it an 7.8 out of 10, considering everything.
Hope this helps clarify everything. *Apologize for lack of pictures; please refer back to Badcat's aviation archives.
