1/32 P-38 Lightning?

Post by dragon53 » Sat May 17, 2008 9:21 pm

I remember awhile back a post about a possible upcoming 1/32 P-38 Lightning.

Can anyone provide more detail on this?

I am working on the premise that if we talk about it enough here it will magically appear.

Seriously, this plane is crying to get made. The only major 1/32 fighters left are the Hellcat, Lightning, Wildcat, Tempest/Typhoon, Hurricane, Aircobra and Russian/Japanese variants.

The Wildcat, Aircobra and Hurrican are covered by other companies and I think you could make a case that the F-6 and P-38 would sell best. 21C would need a new package and price point for the Lightning though. I think this is the twin engine plane they will do first and if it sells well, move on to things like an ME-110, Mosquito and, well, we can run with it from there... 8)

I thought I saw a post about a rumor of an upcoming 1/32 P-38 with the posts about the 1/32 Dauntless and Wildcat from BBI.

Badcat and TKO211 think 21st Century will release a repaint of the 1/18 P-38, but I would prefer a 1/32 P-38.

There are nice 1/32 kits of both the P-38 and BF 110 available. Get to work and sniff that glue! :P

Wish I could still build kits. With these damn shaky hands I'm lucky I can do any customs at all.

Anyhow I think the P-38 is much more recognizable to the unwashed masses than a 110 would be so I would go with the lightning first, then hit other twins with the Mosquito being second.:P

Reasons why I'm surprised BBI didn't release a 1/32 P-38 (instead of the SBD and F4F):

1. The P-38's unique twin engine/twin tail design would make a it a good seller.
2. The P-38's history (Bong, Maguire, Barber) would make it a good seller.
3. The P-38 has more repaint potential which would make it a good seller.
4. The P-38 isn't made by 21st Century in 1/32 or 1/48 which would make it a good seller.

The only reason I can think of as to why BBI hasn't released a 1/32 P-38 is maybe its large size would make it more expensive to produce than single engine planes like the SBD and F4F.

Two quotes from TKO211 about possible upcoming 21st Century P-38s:

1. Oct. 12, 2007:
"P-38 in 32x... You know they have to do it. It's only a matter of when. I would think it's soon. It's such a loved airplane. 21st wants to do one. I have heard them talk about it before and even recently. Like I said it's just a matter of the schedule."

2. May 15, 2008 on a 21st Century repaint of the 1/18 P-38:
"I have heard rumors of a new P-38 repaint as well. Here are the bits that have been told to me.
It's not another green plane as Cal Cutie was the latest installment. So Silver is obviously the other option.
I asked specifically about Bong and was told no. Bong is important and his P-38 is well known however Roy did want to see a "more colorful" scheme. "something that would be different from our other P-38's"
-take that info and for those P-38 experts, your guess is a good as mine!"

Based on these comments, 21st might release an all-new 1/32 P-38 AND a repaint 1/18 P-38.
On the other hand, his latest comments about 21st may mean 21st will release a 1/18 repaint of the P-38 instead of a 1/32 P-38.

I hope TKO211 could clarify this.

I am working off a much shorter sightline. I would be happy to just get a chance at all the FW190s and new P51Ds. Unfortunately all my area WMs have stocked up not once, not twice but three times with the ME109Gs. I have done my part to get these off the shelf and am eager to see something new.

I wonder what is going on overseas as all the manufacturers are overdue on new releases and we are getting no news from any of them. I can appreciate all the challenges they must be facing but I would sure like to see our new 1/32 offerings.

Roy, my money is being spent, only it is going to your competitors. Help me help you!!!

B24GUY:

I sent a PM to TKO211 to see if he could clarify the possibility of an all-new1/32 and/or 1/18 repaint P-38s.

I wish we could see the amount of planes we all want, sadly it's hard for even me to keep high hopes. Nothing really gets me down on my planes and tanks, as I always think to myself, there's always a next week, a tomorrow, a new day, for something to be unveiled, show up on the shelf.

But it's getting harder to believe when so many things are left unanswered, and so many things have been tossed up, and not brought down to Earth. It hurts when you don't have a job, yeah, I get occassional items like today, from my dad, but you know right now you could be supporting and you can't.

But luckily I might be back in business, with an easy, high-paying job, and get to travel. Oh yeah.

But besides that, I'd love to see anything with two engines to spice up my collection. Be it P-38, Me-110, Mosquito, hell, a frickin' Whirlwind...

I'd also like to see those Russian planes... MiG-3? Yak-3? IL-2? Stuff like the Me-163, I don't know, just things you DON'T see on every toy makers to-do list.

Those 1:48 are killing me too. They take up valuable 1:32 shelf space! :D

Yes, that would help things  Part of 21c's problem is the whole distribution thing. I would get more 21c items if I could find them on a regular basis. Like Olifant, I would love to see the 32x planes all at once and not deal with restocks of THE SAME items that were on store shelves last year. The collectors in my area already got their fill on those items and thus few are purchasing them... 21c may ultimately not be able to decide where certain products go, but they can control what is in a particualr case load. It would be awesome to get, say, an FW-190A and P-51D in the same caseload as opposed to tons of the same plane. 21c did that in the past with the Zeros and Macchis as well as the Stukas and Corsairs. It would help with variety and perhaps saleability.

Well said. I have picked up double of planes I already have to sell to other board members, squirrel away for a rainy day and to do some repaints. I don't mind doing this from time to time to keep stock moving, but I feel like my finger is stuck in the dike when they keep shipping the same damn thing. I think there are only four planes in a case from what keeps popping up.

Sometimes I think WMs warehouse must look like the scene from the first Indy movie where the Ark is doomed to gather dust. :P
