CDC Armor vs Matchbox Collectibles

Post by olifant » Fri Mar 04, 2005 12:32 pm

Can someone help me out here? My understanding is that Matchbox Collectibles is using the old CDC Armor molds to produce the same AFVs. Some of them seem to be direct copies with the same paint and markings like the 105MM Sherman.

Is this correct? For someone like myself who displays everything out of package there would be no difference, correct?

Also, I don't think Matchbox has reproduced all the old CDC stuff. I have not seen any Panthers, Mk IVs or the Wirbelwind.

Is there a CDC/Matchbox expert in the house?

Thanks

I'm definitley not an expert, but I do have some of the Matchbox tanks... and actually I do have a couple of Matchbox Panthers and a Mark IV type F1 (in panzer grey color). Anyway, check out Mike's Diecast Tanks website, he's got all the info you need on Matchbox and CDC...here's the link.

Hope this helps.

When CDC stopped making/selling the armoured vehicles a few years ago, Matcxhbox was the company that purchased the diecast mold - thus the reason that the replicas are similar (if not identical).

There are exceptions to this in the series, such as the Churchill and T-34, which were not CDC. Matchbox also released a couple of the CDC Shermans in new markings.

The CDC collection was wonderful. I have about 50 of them. I bought them wherever I could find them. I paid as little as $15.00 and as much as $35.00 for them. I see them offered once in a while on e-bay. Always $75.00 and up. I think that all of the tanks were produced, except for the Tigers. I like the Dragon tanks, but the CDC tanks are better detailed and better quality in my opinion. I have heard that Franklin Mint purchased the moulds from Matchbox, but do not know if this is for sure. The re-issues came out first in a box only(no display case). They then issued them in a nice diorama setting. Matchbox did re-issue a Wirblewind. I also have their Panther and PzIV tanks. As mentioned, Mike's Tanks is a great place for info. Take care.
