What's going on with the forum? Nov 2019

Post by p51 » Mon Nov 04, 2019 7:40 pm

Since I'm removing the yellow information bar from the top, I figured I'd edit this post for those who pop on here occasionally. So, on November 4th, I was forced to upgrade the php on this server. Sadly, the new version of php didn't play nice with the forum software, which is phpBB. That caused the forums to have all sorts of major issues. The phpBB software was behind quite a bit, and mostly on purpose as at one point, they upgraded the software to the point all older versions weren't compatible. So, now being forced to update phpBB, I spent most of the day migrating and converting the old phpBB software to the latest version. We are not updated and on the latest version, but that meant we lost the old theme/style of this board. I went and found something that had similar colors as the old theme, but I still need to change the header graphics and tweak some things. We didn't lose any posts, we didn't lose any members, but we gained some awesome new features, responsive theming (so this forum will work great on a phone and fill an entire desktop!), and overall it should be a lot faster! The only downside is we lost all the avatars. So you can re-upload a new avatar, or just save your old one (go to the user panel) and reupload it. Enjoy the modern era of phpBB!

Lots of great new features, especially the responsive formatting for mobile devices. We jumped a LOT of updates, and sadly that broke the old theme and I can't migrate that over. So I'll be either making a custom theme or finding a theme that is similar and just modifying it. Until now, enjoy the boring basic blue/silver theme!

Blue/silver? All I see is green and gray.

I just test-changed it to a new theme I quickly found. Didn't think it would be this quick to get a new theme added! It's still basic, but it's 'closer'.

Looks like everyone might have to reinstall their avatars, only major issue I'm seeing so far. It shows up in the user panel, but you have to download your avatar, then reupload it.

Except for my avatar, the new site seems to be working on my end, but it sure is different! Then again, when we had basically the same formatting since 2004, it was time for an update :D

Yeah, that was an ooooooooooooooold version of phpBB. I would update it every now and then, but it took a bit of work to keep that theme alive. This brings us into the latest version, which seems faster and really looks nice on mobile. The previous theme had no clue what responsive device formatting was. Ha ha.

Don't know how it looks on everyone else's screen, but it's BIGGER on mine. Got an avatar back I haven't had for years. Was able to upload a different way now.....or maybe I always could? but it worked and that's what counts. Will take some getting used to all the little squares but it does look great. :)

The previous design was made back in 2004 or earlier when web responsive designs weren't a thing... so it was set to a fixed size for smaller monitors at 800x600 size. This new theme, and the new forum software, will resize itself based on your monitor size. So it should fill the entire monitor now.
