Small Scale Military Headquarters

Just wondering if any of our illustrious board members have taken a shot at making an XD compatible ship of any kind. Since my failed attempt at making a 1/18 full hull u-boat i've been searching for new ideas.

Anyone taking a stab at any ships? I know Red said he was going to finish his troop transport but that was a looong time ago and i have a hunch he hasn't worked on it. Shame, shame

I keep looking at hobby shops to see any 1/18 scale boat kits. It'd be cool to biuld a 1/18 Santa Maria or Golden Hind.

I would have thought a higgins boat would be the first choice among customs.

After I get done with my current lathe/mill project...hummm

there was actually a close to 1/18 scale Santa Maria on Ebay a few months ago. It was about 5 feet long. I was thinking about it but it was a pretty crude model so i decided not to get it.

The trouble with ships is there so dang big..

My R/C USCG 47' MLB is 1/18 scale, well, 1/18.5 to be exact. I am working on a crew for her now, then will detail her a bit further in the future. The bad thing about detailing an operating model is that the finer details tend to take a beating while running the model, thus there has to be a compromise as far as how detailed you can get.

I am in the process of scaling down a set of drawings for an exact 1/18 scale 41' UTB. This one will be R/C'ed as well. I know these aren't ships,(In the USCG, technically any vessel under 65' in length is a boat, anything over 65' is classified as a cutter, or "ship".) but I have toyed with the idea of a 1/18 scale 87' WPB, although at 58" long it would be a heck of a project. Let me clear my workbench of a few projects and I'll get back to you on that one.

I still think you can still do a 1/18th u boat, I just think you have to use wood to make the hull.

agreed....but i know nothing about wood working and have no tools for a job like that. I remember once i saw a dutch site where a chap had made a bunch of r/c submarines, all in 1/20 scale, from wood. The detailing on them was supurb. He'd made 4 or 5 iirc and each one was better than the next.

Oh to have such skill..

the hull will be 12 feet long..they may be able to make it, but how will they get it to me?

Maybe i'll buy a canoe hull and use that...

They could ship it in sections once they are done, then all you need to do is glue it clamp it or bolt it togther.

Ive always thought about making a section or several of a 1/18 german kriegsmarine sub. But it would take a lot of work, money, and time. So it looks like that will not happen till I finish school and get a good job. But im still thinking, and its always good to start planning ahead

Cars, houses, tractors... the list goes on... So is the way of the world. Then again, it was a bit of a shock when I called to get my heating oil tank filled for the winter to find out that in the 6 years I have been in this house, the price of fuel oil has gone from $0.98/gallon to $2/70/gallon. (I could go terribly political at this point, but will be nice). So I am planning to upgrade my heating system to a new high-tech alternative: wood. Have chainsaw, front-end loader, and dumptruck. Will travel

No ships, but I was thinking of making some 60mm or so train track to put a siding in my camp and perhaps some Euro frieght cars too. But it's just an idea The General

i think the best solution for making ships in our scale (other than buying powerful binoculars and looking at little models through them ), is to just make small portions of ships...like the turret of a battleship or the bridge of a carrier, the nose of a zeppelin etc. (I actually started to make the turret of the battleship Rodney but lost interest...have to get back to that one.)

I could just buy small scale ship models, but i like the interaction of my 1/18 scale figures with my stuff (even though these same figures are apparently plotting against me behind my back), so making sections of ships would be more fun and would also convey the incredible size of these vessels better. Plus, when i'm rich and retired i can finish off the ships i've started in the basement of my huge mansion.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but maybe the main hull section could be made from PVC piping. I know I have seen stuff that's in different sizes, I don't know just a thought. Good luck!

I work on a Cyclone class PC and I think it would be perfect for 1/18. Theres two models of it at our building but the biggest is like 1/35. Ill see if I can snap a pic of it.

Every once in awhile on Ebay, there are some boats/ships made by Playmobil. There is one I picked up a few months ago of a fishing troller. The overall ship is great. You just need to modify the wheelhouse to 1:18 scale. (This one has been discontinued for years and you'll have to pay a pretty price for it)

Same with the cargo freighter they have. It seems a bit small but it looks like it would actually do work on a river or canal. You just need to modify the bridge section.

Noah's Ark and the some of the pirate ships can also be converted.
You can occasionally find these cheap at the second hand store.

Repaint and weather these babies and now you'll have something for your Bristol Beaufighter to strafe or torpedo.

Or if you get a whole bunch, you can do Operation Dynamo the evacuation of Dunkirk.

I just thought of another way of getting ships into our 1/18 scale collections. First thing you need is to make a 1/18 scale custom figure of yourself. Then, you make a 1/18 scale model of a 1/18 scale model (this is about 1/350 scale) of the ship you are interested in and pose the custom figure of yourself playing/tinkering with it. In other words it's a 1/18 scale model of you posing beside the 1/18 scale model you wish you had. Brilliant, no?

I think you could maybe just start small and build yourself the conning tower of a late model VIII class U-Boat the ones that had the twin quads in the Flakturm.

But if you want a quick and nasty option why don’t you make a Neger or the very simular Marder subs like those below, these where used in anger during the D-day landings and had several successes, just borrow a torpedo from one of you Avengers





…..or instead of making one of the above glorified human torpedos, you could build one of the true midget U-boats like the Hetch, Molch, Seehund, or Biber subs all of these would be doable especially considering the size, or lach there of.

holy cow.....you can buy 1/350 scale painted figures! These things are about 1/10th of an inch tall...and they come prepainted. Remarkable.
