How many tanks does it take to make a Division ???

Post by General Blasto » Wed Sep 26, 2007 6:57 am

Being I'm not a military person, I was just curious how many tanks does it take to make a German tank Division or the next element smaller of a tank division ??? What are the smaller elements called for a German tank division ??? I think I have a good start to building a German tank division or element there of.

There are a few more, but this is the bulk of my German tank forces, less the panzers and winter models which total about 15 more tanks. Reinforcements ARE on the way too from evil bay :P The General

Very nice collection and if you are happy with all those tanks in exactly the same paint jobs, more power to you. 8)

I understand the desire to have several tanks MIB, especially if a "clearance sale" pops up but with the eBay insanity going on now???, and to have all those tanks out of boxes (and no longer MIB) and lined up, is more like XD toy wallpaper......

A collection of anything is like opinions and butts, everybody has their own......

If you're happy, I'm happy....

Thanks Capt. !!!
Now I know what I need. Unfortunatly, they don't make the earlier Panzer I,II and IIIs :( But a little kitbashing and perhaps future releases might help ;) :) The General

Hey TTT,
Most of those tanks HAVE made it into the field.

But I'm just gearing up to do a HUGE tank battle movie clip 8)

The Americans also have a good number of tanks, but as many as the Huns. The General

Very nicely done, but be sure those tanks out in the open have some air cover or perhaps a captured M-16 halftrack.

I like the way you operate, General Blasto.

I guess it would take an entire German tank division to kill Stitch.

I tried to use Aferg's link and it kept stalling on me.

So what is the answer: How many tanks make a division or battalion?

Are their heavy tank units?, medium?, light? and how many support vehicles are involved (half-tracks etc). That's forgetting about maintenance support and the like. We can't have them until 21C comes out with the monster German half-tracks, or we get U.S. wreckers and CCKW's......hint, hint..

There's not enough for an entire Panzer division, or even for a S.Pz.Abt. (Heavy tank battalion)

You will need around 45 Tiger tanks, if you're going for a generic Tiger battalion. The numbers vary between battalions, and between different periods. For example, the S.Pz.Abt. 502 were over-strength in early 1944, which had around 81 or so (in their roster at least).

If you're going for realism, panther tanks were never issued to heavy tank battalions, which is all Tigers and Tiger IIs. (They had some light platoons of Panzer IIIs in the heavy tank battalion for support, but this was early in the war.)

If you want, you can go make a Kampfgruppe. In a Kampfgruppe, you can usually see an assortment of men and vehicles, in different numbers. For example, one kampfgruppe can have 4 tigers, and 11 panthers, etc etc.

Ok, lets do the math. 79 Panthers at a current average price of around $200.00.
comes to $15,800.00 GB. Not impossible considering how many you have already. I really like these tanks but not that much.

If the guy has a toy and dollie budget that high, I would say, more power to him. If it was me, and I spent that kind of money on my toys and dollies, I'd just hope the wifey never found out. , because I just know, my sons would get a call to come down and dig a big hole in the Pine Barrens.....

Just to clarify the situation of funding for my new hobby.
I came from the garden railway hobby where as I was opressed into taking it down, I thinned out my collection a bit selling some rolling stock and locos. New freight car go for around $80 -$120 each, Locos start around $275 each and passenger cars around $200 each. My custom work and paints bring double that. So I had some money in the bank as they say to get a new start on a new hobby. If 1:18th kits were availible or tanks for sale at the usual new price of less than $40, I'd be a happier camper ;) The General

VERY impressive collection! Good for you! I know this 1:18 scale is VERY ADDICTIVE! You start buying and can't stop! I don't know how many times I've walked into a WM or TRU and was lucky to find XD! And even if I already had it, or a few of 'em, I HAD to BUY what was there!!! And if I didn't, I HATED myself for passing it up!!
So KEEP ON with your collection! It's FUN!

Hey General Blasto,
You don't have to clarify anything. You have a very nice collection of armor. I like the look of all of them lined up in a row. Many people would kill to have a collection like that. OK maybe not kill but they would give up something dear to them to have your collection. (lots of money)
It is easy for people to say negative things about a subject when they dont have anything to compare to. Be proud of what you have. With your amount of Panthers you could possibly have one of the biggest colection of them ( or in the top ten) on the planet. And baby that is braggin' rights.
