totally off the wall idea

Has anyone seen or heard of maybe a 1/18th or 1/32 etc.. U-Boat or PT-boat...tell these wouldn't be the coolest things made...I know size issues but as a display item on a mantle...awesome.

Yeah ,.. that'd be really cool , ,.. but forget it !

I could see however , somebody like Dragon or even 21st. for that matter , doing like just a "Conning tower" section w/ partial hull of one though. ... It would'nt be that too far fantastic to do either , I would'nt think.

Don't remember exactly, but it seems like a Uboat in 1/32 would be better than 6 foot long..

you'd need a pretty big mantle. Even a type viic uboat, which is a small submarine, would be over 7 feet long in 1/32 scale. There are a couple available by r/c submarine makers but they cost a couple of thousand dollars, with delivery charges and they're kits so you have to build them. There's a conning tower kit made by Andrea Miniatures, costs close to $1000. Lindberg made a 1/32 PT boat, which you can find on ebay and Italarei makes a 1/35 PT boat model.

In 1/18, the type viic would be about 12 feet and change. Nothing close is available. My attempts at building one have been so far fruitless....i just don't have the skills nor tools to make the sections look good enough or mate precisely enough without big gaps. I am most discouraged.

There is a 1/20 PT boat kit by Dumas. I picked up one on ebay a few years ago, built up, for around $350, which was a good price. It is a bit of a fixer upper but well within my abilities. It is 4 feet long and 13 inches wide. I once won a 1/20 scale German E boat model on ebay. It was nearly 6 feet long. The boat was in the UK and i had to pass on it because shipping charges were enourmous. The seller was very understanding.

okay I guess it'd have to be a 1/72 sub. I don't really have room for a seven foot model. ALthough it would be cool especially if you could see inside and stuff.

I have a 1/18 scale Swift boat that's waiting for me to work on it. I picked it up on E-bay about a year ago. It was a R/C project, IIRC.

There are original Navy plans out there for the Swift Boat, PBR and River Monitor as well as the Pegasus-class PHM (not to mention lots of others, those are just the ones I own). So, it wouldn't be too hard to build one if you had the free time.

There are several 1/72 scale subs, both a Type VIIC and a US Gato boat, which could be converted into any one of about 20+ different versions for WWII or the Cold War.

Another neat thing would be a 1/6 or 1/18 scale CSS Hunley (I've seen a 1/32 scale, but that's the biggest I'm aware of, other than some 1/1 replicas in museums).

I was at Hobby Lobby today looking at 1/72 sub models, thinking "that could be cool". They had a Gato and a U-boot. According to the box, the Gato was over 5 feet long and the U-boot was about 3 feet. I don't think they had any interior detail, though.

hey.....those targa u-boats even have little guys inside.

with all those removable pieces though i think it may not look so great when all assembled.....lots o' join lines.
