Centone:

We have you to find out about this stuff, I feel icky when I lurk on these "Joe" sites. Like I'm listening in on a kindergarden class. Like the comment about the cool "howitzer" on the back of the Humvee?? Well, I guess we're not all old or experienced or smart. Anyone one or all of that.

Now all we need is a Wal-Mart.

Thanks for the heads up.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between a regular humvee and a 'super' humvee. It's clearly not armor so what is it? And the weapon in the bed of the humvee...is that a recoiless rifle?

The weapon is a 106mm Recoiless rifle. As part of the gun also is a .50 cal spotting rifle on top of the barrel.

A really neat weapon. It has two wheels, elevation and traverse. Gunner sits on one leg of the mount, facing the gun, looks thru a telescopic sight. He moves both wheels to bring the gun on target and one wheel (traverse) has a small knob in the center. You pull up on the knob and every time you do the spotting rifle fires (10 round clips). The .50 cal projectile is tracer and white phosperous, easy to follow your hits. When you see the .50 cal hit your target you simply push down on the knob and the 106 fires. Trajectory of both are the same. The weapon has been used since the 60's. I was trained (and fired Expert) with the weapon in 1963 as an anti-tank weapon mounted on a Mutt. We were to go against T-62's and T-72's, plinking away with our spotting rifles while the Russian range finders found us and gave us a really bad day. We did have a lot of fun tearing around with the gun, it's better to ride than walk.

As far as I can tell, the only difference in the Humvees are the number of guns.

Well, as a poster at those "Joe" sites, and more of a lurker here...I'm not sure how to take that comment. No, others aren't as old, experienced or as smart. That's not to say they're children either. Most of us are adults with jobs and wives and interests not much different than yours.

BTW, what good is a Wal-Mart going to do you? These are at TRU.

Also, remember the 106 is a "line of sight" weaon, not indirect like artillery. It wouldn't be fired over the cab, only side to side. The "Dead" zone from the backblast is a triangle from the breech out over 100 yards. The loader's job is to load and then turn and face rear to make sure the blackblast are is free of "friendlies".

I find it odd to mount a 106 in that position, I've seen them on the roof of a M-113 but that would have greater movement.

Extn:

My intention was not to offend, please take my remark with a grain of salt.

See, you helped me out, advising me to go to TRU,

I said we were old, experience or smart. Not all three, especially considering me.

My appologies.

Like I said...I wasn't too sure how to take it. There's absolutely no harm done. I hope I didn't come off to 'prickish' either.

And you too, have educated me on the recoiless rifle. It seems from your description that they were used primarily as anti-armor weapons, no? If so, do they still use them today, or have they been replaced with TOW and/or other anti-armor weapons?

The 106mm RR was an anti-tank weapon. It was designed to be used in an ambush setting, like the WWII anti-tank guns and open turreted armored vehicles like the M-18 and the M-10.

The 106mm RR was designed to be Jeep mounted because once it is fired, the backblast creates such a cloud of dirt and dust and fires started from burnt bush & trees that the entire neighborhood knows exactly where the gun is. The Jeep moves the gun QUICKLY to a new location.

The function is currently provided by the TOW, the Hellfire and a collection of hand held missles.

Any of these weapons can also be used against "hard" targets, buildings, bunkers, Mr. Softee ice cream trucks, anything.

I really don't know what they are doing in Iraq now. I would not have believed they were mounted on Humvee's if pics had not circulated on a number of our toy sites.

the new humvee is great. new figure (among the most realistic yet with berretta m9 sidearm to boot), better scaled m249 saw's, good detailing, MAJOR configurability, the 106 RR is incredible (with two extra rounds), a new molded M60, excellent dash detail (with radio)... looking at it, it really looks like a completely different thing from previous BBI EF stuff.

One slight critique:

-if the humvee is 2nd battallion usmc, why does the hood read us army? I suspect that will not go over too well for sentimental Jarheads in receipt of US ARMY surplus.

Post by 75th Ranger » Tue Jan 25, 2005 8:42 am

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can post pictures of the new figures that is supposed to be included with the super hummer 1/18 vehicle from BBI.
i want to see it close to see if they made any changes to the previuos modern 1/18 figures like they did with the WWII new line that they came out with.
keep me posted.

Ranger,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

He looks pretty cool, and the sidearm is nice.
Shame they never released the LAV/M1 driver as regular figures - they were the best modern "regulars" we've seen.

Only thing is that the ankles are not articulated, but the arms are better done.
Also the best looks good. by the looks of the pictures, the sidearm seems to be removable from the holster am i right?
what do you guys think?

Correction - it looks like the holster is the old one from the USMC guys that has a gun stuck in it - but there is a loose sidearm included.

thaks!
shame that the ankles are not removable like the 1st series figures..t limits the posable positions that you can place the figures in, but so far this figure looks pretty good! and more like one of our guys in the War now.
I wonder if they are going to make a newer serie of modern figures?...
other than the ones out now....digital marines..
does anyone knows?
keep me posted.

Our local TRU had 8 of them on the shelf. It was the first time I've seen them at that store. :D
