Went to my local TRU to pick an XBox game up for the stepson, and while browsing the "empty" military isle, there was a surprise..
An XD P-38, silver w/invasion stripes in a beat up box.. I picked it up and it had a $59.99 sticker on it.. I went to a price checker and Whoa!!!
It was $59.99.. The box looked awful and had been opened.. I looked inside and everything was there and undamaged.. But I put it back.. Too much for me.. But I thought I'd ask cause I had never seen that version before.. :?

That is the S1 version and it depicts a P-38 flown by Maj. Sabo of the 485th FS of the 370th FG in Europe in 1944. The 21st version is missing the nose art, which depicted a naked lady sitting in a martini glass with the French words "Les Vin, Les Femmes, et Les Chansons" (translated as "The Wine, the Women, and the Song). Aftermarket decals have been made to corect that error.

The plane is somewhat rare. Small retailers used to carry them after TRU. Considering that it was first sold at TRU in 2002 (making it nearly 3 years old) I find it VERY surprising that you found it still being sold for the full price! Most XD stuff should by now be offered at clearance prices at TRU, assuming some is still scattered around. Guess that isn't the norm, however.

I had a similar experience (in early 2002) involving an S1 Panther tank in a totally trashed box, but otherwise complete, being sold for the full price of $40. I didn't go for it as I thought then that $40 was too much for something with a box in that shape. I finally bought a Panther (Winterized version) this past December for $53 total!

Hworth, $60 is to much but see if they can knock a few $$$$ off the price. This P-38 Lighting with invasion stripes from 21st was one of the best from the first line. My Wife and stepson gave it to me on my birthday 3 years ago and its on the wall in my office (home) and looks fantastic.
If you don't have this one I'd pick it up  .... if the the price was right.

Hi-
I thought the green "Samantha Payton" was older than the silver D-Day
P-38??
They are both great looking planes.

The D-Day P-38 was Series one, while Samantha was S-2. Putt Putt was a very close and rare (not anymore) S-3 followed by Halakeala at S-4 and the last and least Shark in at S-5.........
