Tender Terror Over Hyped?

I went to my local hobby show last night and brought TT along with me. It got alot of looks and so fourth but then I got into a discussion with few of the regulars that collect 1/18th planes. One of them said and I quote " Its over hyped and nothing special". I asked him to explain. The first thing he said was that without the certificate of authenticity the plane is nothing special and is worth zilch, something that tko did point out awhile ago. He said that there were other planes that had better paint schemes (The Tuskegee P-51 and Petie The 2nd for example) and that once BBD hits the market TT will all but be forgotton. I countered that only 200 or so were made and that only so many of us collectors had them and his reply? "So what". The guy had a right to his opinion and he also said he wouldnt pay $100 for it because in his veiw and a couple others last night that it just wasnt worth it. Not all agreed with him but it did leave me thinking I will say that. The guy did say that for a special promotion P-51 that 21st could have added more detail and so fourth to make it even more rare and sought after. He said all 21st did was do a paint scheme that probably will never be seen again in the 1/18th field but that was it. Nothing new was added to the new tool mold to really make it any different then what 21st has out there now.
Like I said the guy has a right to his opinion. Do I think that its over rated? No. Why? Because I participated in a once and a life time promotion, had to spend money, and had to wait quite awhile to get my hands on this P-51. Now could 21st have givin it a little more detail here and there? Maybe. But thats not for me to say. Is the paint scheme really a big deal? It is in a way because it represents a P-51 that was unknown to many, even the 357th website dont have hardly anything on this bird or its pilot. You see alot of P-51 repaints depicting the best known Mustangs and its famous pilots but nothing about the unsung hero P-51's or its pilots. So TT is special in its own way.
What do you guys think? Is TT over hyped and did this guy I ran into last night make some valid points? I look forward to your comments guys. I know it did make me think but in the end I feel very fortunate to have TT.

Maybe the guy is jealous that he doesn't have one. He does make some valid points but still there are only 200 or so of these in the whole world so I would say that makes it pretty special. I would like to have one, but I have a thing for the 357th birds.

Hey killer,
I agree. The guy may be jealous and like you I to have a thing for 357th Mustangs. I dont what it is about the 357th but they are my favorite Group in the ETO thats why I cant wait to get 21st's Old Crow. Besides that I got a chance to meet Col Bud Anderson and have him sign my book about him so Old Crow means alot. Just as HHH does.

So what are they gonna add to the BBD or Old Crow, to make it different?
Same old plane in a new paint sceme and available everywhere.
The guy is a jealous turd.

I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feeling but I think the TT is overrated. I think if 21st had used a new mold for a removable engine cowl, top and bottom, and gunlocks like the 1:32 scale aircraft has. And made the TT the first mustang on the block to have those features. Then I would think the TT would be special. It would be the first mustang of a new detailed look. Of course 21st could make others detailed mustangs along with the old molds but charge a higher price say double for what a p-51 gores for these days.
Nope I think its hyped ups with no new special features other then its prop is fixed which should not have been a problem. A few other collators in my area have also said the same things. Also I will hold of buying any more P-51’s until they have more detail. So I might be waiting a long time, but I want to have room for them when they do come out. Heck I might have to get this
http://www.badcataviation.com/gmpsedi901sc.html
Now if the TT had this type of set up or was the first p-51 paint schema to hve it then it would be worth something.
Hey Roy or from 21st or Jason from AT this is what I want to see in the 1:18 scale.
http://www.badcataviation.com/gmpsedi901sc.html
I bet if AT made that set up they would make a ton of sales….hint hint
It has nothing to do about jealousy, but has every thing to with what most people perceive to be a good deal. So many times in the past few years consumers have paid a premium price on limited or special offers that are nothing more the repaints of the existing mold or fancy packaging. Just my two cents.
If I spent 160 US dollars for a mustang I better get more detail like the that mustang I linked.
Sorry guys thats how I feel.

It seems that jealousy is one of the stand by excuses when it comes to people not thinking much of the Tender Terror but its not as though this guy or anyone else couldn’t have gotten one if he had wanted it. You participated in a once in a life time marketing scheme to help 21st unload product it couldn’t sell under normal circumstances. You spent enough money to buy probably two or three new planes and enough paint and other supplies to do a custom TT yourself. It’s not a terribly difficult scheme after all and the nose art could probably have been found in a book and made into a water slide decal. You waited a long time because you really didn’t have a choice. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the P-51. I’ve built three in R/C and am working on a fourth but I only have one in 1:18 scale. In this hobby and others, value is in the eye of the beholder. So just because someone doesn’t gush all over the TT when he sees it doesn’t mean he’s jealous. He probably just doesn’t care.

Who cares what others think. People on this board know how limited and special the T.T. Mustang is. If you're happy with it, that's all what counts. We all know how difficult it was to participate in the promotion and only limited people had the opportunity to do so. I for one didn't because at the time there was no 1/18 XD in my area. Those same guys who said all those negative things about your T.T. would be singing a different tune if the roles were reversed. I guarantee it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry guys thats how I feel.

But I also got four Fw-190s with it!!!
Of course, I would feel better if I had mine to know whether or not it is overhyped or not!!

However this is for the die-hard collectors that value the TT for it’s historical importance.
MightyMustang I am glade that you have the mustang you wanted and for all of you that have one, you guys share did have to wait a long time to get yours.
But I still feel that 21st should have made it more special with removable engine cowls and gunlocks with a crew chief. Even if they made more ( Not TT, but with the detai)l for resale at WM you guys would have the first one with a limited paint scheme

What did the other guy bring to the model show? That's right ANOTHER 1/48TH SCALE TAMIYA KIT! Hardcore military modlers will never come to grips
with the fact that our stuff is cooler than their stuff is.

A kit that he BUILT and PAINTED. Compared to something you took out of a box. So following your logic on scale does that mean 1/6th is automatically cooler than 1/18th?

Some of the local modeling guys said once the pre manufactured 1:18 and 1:32 scale military toys reach the level of what the expert modeler can do, then you will have believers and potential customers.
to many you can't buy it so you make it.

There is one thing that I think they should have done with the T. Terror.Put it in a special box. I think that that would have been the icing on the cake. A special plane should go in a special box

I definitely agree on a special box and have mentioned alot in the past, that would've done the deal right there. But, it's still a special plane in that only approx. 200 were done, has a coa, nuff said! I also agree on the jealousy theory, I've collected all kinds of stuff my whole life, guns, toys, currency, stamps, etc and it's always the same...always a neysayer when you have something they don't. To tell a guy to his face "it's nothing special" is nothing short of an a@@hole, period, and a jealous one at that. This is the same guy that if he himself had one it'd be on ebay with a boatload of BS in the description and a buy it now for $1000. Plus look how long it took to get these...if they added additional features then geez who knows when they'd showed... I'm happy with mine, glad 21st did it and hope they do something like it again (especially to get rid of all the freakin' Avengers, at least in my area). One of the main aspects I saw of the contest was yeah it was to help out 21st, but it helped me too as with a few less 190's on the rack, the stores RE-ordered new stuff. As far as the plane, I personally like the scheme, nothing fancy but at least was an authentic scheme. To me about the only way they could've made it "special" was to have done the RB-51 with a detailed Griffon and a figure with the likeness of Steve Hinton...

It looks nice and all, but it's a very simplistic paint scheme, and kinda boring.
The only thing that stands out is the beautiful nose art...but I'd be a fool if I would spend $100 on a nose art I could paint by myself.
And someone mentioned about TT having historical significance....Eh?
I gotta go research that plane more...but I don't think TT was a historically significant bird...tell me if I'm wrong.
And I dunno...I guess if you are a die-hard collector that has to HAVE every possible repaints, I guess it's worth it. But seriously...aside from the nose job, what exactly does TT have to offer? Bragging rights?
Come on guys. We're all over the age of 10 here. I think the "Nyah nyah I got something rare and you don't" mentality is like....so grade-school.
Saying that TT is nothing special will have that person pounced upon by all of you?
If the guy said it in a mean way, and just told MM that the TT sucked and didn't explain why he felt that way, I would agree that he was just jealous.
But MM seemed to imply that the person just stated his opinion, and wasn't being spiteful.
But I do think that TT will always be special to those people who waited soooooooooo long for their plane. And that is quite cool.
The funny thing is, Corgi came out with an UBER-GODLY 1/18th Spitfire decked out in soooo many detail, and also highly collectible because of it's very limited numbers, and nearly all of you said it's not worth the $1500 price tag.
But now, suddenly, a TT that will go for 500-600 on Ebay is suddenly so worth it? With no special features whatsoever? Not even a Certificate of Authenticity?
Come on now...

When you have one you are proud of it when you don't you wish you did or you are jealous. I wish I had 2 . They have only just come up for auction. time will tell of the true value. It is easy to be criticle when you don't have one and have no way of getting one. Kind of like the sour grape fable. The fox tries and tries to get the grapes and they are out of his reach. He walks away and says they were probably sour anyway.

Actually, If I wanted one, I could just bid one on Ebay. If I really like a particular item, the high price isn't really that much of a factor.
So no, I don't wish to have one, or jealous at people who have one.

well

Timbo, you break out a 1/6th Mustang, and yes it will be cooler - automatically.
As for the TT, the prixe is in the LIMITED. I am not big into that, but some people are and there is a price to pay. Only 500 Patricia F86 were made, and there was an appeal to that. To each his own. In any case, if you can get a couple of hundred bucks for your TT, and at least $150 for your 4 190s, you made out OK in my eyes. Especially if you got the 190s on sale or had someone send you there receipt and upc.

I wouldn't say the plane is over-rated... As far as the plane goes, it is the same basic 21c retooled P-51, only that it has straight props and a rare paintscheme. Is it my favorite paintscheme in the world? Not really. Would I spend a fortune to get one on ebay? No. I don't think it was overrated, but it certainly does win out in the rare collectable factor

Well Digger, the one I'm building is 1:6.5 but I think that is close enough.

Well I've sat back and read all the posts to my topic and so far its about even. The guy that made the comments about TT at the Hobby Show wasnt being a jerk so I just wanna clear that up. He was stateing his opinion, which is just that, his opinion. Now the guy might have been hiding that he wished he would have had one but I cant say that because he didnt show any signs of being "jealous". Now TT did get alot of attention and alot of looks and alot of very nice comments and 21st got all the props they could get from me. You might say I was their unofficial representative. So one persons comments didnt phase me at all. I did have Marines Dream with me also and it drew ALOT of attention more so then TT did but thats another story I wont go into. Now TT to some might be no big deal but as I look at it to me it is a big deal. Why? Because I own one of the few Mustangs ever produced and I'm part of a group of guys who can lay claim to that. Not many can. Now are those who dont have one jealous? I'm not gonna say that because it would be wrong to make such a claim. And I wont even go there because thats not me. I dont rub things in peoples faces. You either like TT or you dont its your opinion and I respect all your guy's veiws so thanks for the replies.

Yeah, and you didn't have to spend four or five hundred dollars to get into the club.

Now that's the best part..
I do like TT, and I would like to have one. Not enough to pay what they are going for on ebay, but if I came across one and the price was right I would buy it. I'm not into TT because it is so rare, but because it was a member of the 357th. Like I stated before I have an afinity for aircraft from that fighter group.
Truthfuly since displaying aircraft hurts the collector value, special or limited edition aircraft don't mean much to me as I display all my aircraft.
