With the news of the 1:18 21st P-38 'California Cutie' coming out this year, I got to thinking. Do you think 21st would ever consider coming out with one for Glacier Girl? That plane is very local and pretty special to me cause of that and I'd like to have one in 1:18 if they ever decided to make it. So you think they would? I am sure more people out there besides me would be interested in it.

Being that I have only joined this board in January and have been collecting 1:18 and 1:32 since last August, I don't have a considerable amount of experience to know what girds the interest from the manufacturers for producing certain airplanes. My simplest guesses are notoriety, historical background, and paint schemes available for certain aircraft.
With that being said, P-38 Glacier Girl would only stand a chance of being produced (my best guesstimation) only if more people were aware of its unusualy history. 21st has already produced about seven (someone correct me if I'm off) versions of the P38, all based on WWII history and attractive liveries. Doubt they're going to make another green one since they have two now. Heck I could be wrong....they've made so many silver Mustangs and two more are on the way!!
Not much is known about Glacier Girl's WWII history (at least from what I've read, I could be wrong), but recently much has been made about its modern history. Being unearthed from deep inside an actual glacier up in Greenland? Iceland? and being so well preserved is such an awesome story.
This plane is sort of the P-38 version of the F4U Corsair - Marines Dream that is all over air shows. That Corsair's paint scheme is really awesome even though that exact plane and model class never saw service in that particular paint. Since BBI produced a sort of non WWII historical Corsair, and it sold very well, it would be nice to see someone build the same with this P-38.

It was under 270 ft of ice in Greenland, among 5 other P-38s and 2 B-17s. I don't think it was ever used in combat, it was being flown over to England to start its combat career when the crew got lost and had to land in Greenland, then after their rescue the planes got left behind. I am not sure on that though. They sale 1:64 scale versions of it at the museum over there (and I have one), but I would like to have it in 1:18 scale.
I think in a few years they may work thier way to making it, just because of the story behind it and it is one of very few P-38s thats still flying today. Even if it is a limited edition run just for the museum (which runs entirely off donations).

Hey i have a cool story, since they have gotten that to fly before, my friend flys A-10s, and is the Flight Instructor for them, and he got to fly in formation with the Glacier Girl P-38!!! He met the Pilot too, and said it was a great experiance, and yes a glacier girl p-38 would be awesome!

At least make a decal set for it. That would be nice. The S1 version of the P-38 is plane and could be customized easily.

Glacier Girl is a E model IIRC, and 21st has a L/J model.
Completely different cowlings.
I wish they would build the earlier model since it looks so much better.
Also with Glacier Girl retracing her fateful flight and ending up in the UK, there will be some hype promoting the Girl.
There is a book that includes the Glacier Girl flight, but I thing it was written before the discovery and recovery. (1991)
"Hello Spacebar this is Springcap"
Story of the 94th FS in WWII
by John D. Mullins
He was a pilot of one of the P-38's
A good read.

Ah yes, shes a F model, and the 21st is the J. That is probally something that would prevent them from doing it. Also, I think they sell that book at the Museum for Glacier Girl. There is a lot of cool stuff you can learn just buy going in and reading the stuff they have put up, and asking the guys whatever questions you have. I am going to go over again this year when they fly her, soon as I find out when that will be.

I had the pleasure of seeing her fly at the Lakeland (FL) Sun 'n Fun FlyIn two years ago...met the crew and in particular the fellow who led the expedition (I believe) named Bob. I cannot tell you in words, without choking up and tears (only true airplane lovers understand this one) what a BEAUTIFUL SITE AND A RESTORATION OF BEAUTY she was, and to hear her engines and see her fly was truly historical. Wish I had had a digital camera then so as to post pictures of this event.
Great post and request bdr_ws6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Count me in on Glacier Girl in 1/18. There is one plastic offering, in an off-scale, 1/100 or something like that, thus a "real" scale offering would be MOST EXCELLENT...how about 1/32 minimum or 1/18--PLEASE.

I was in Middlesboro with my parents and grandparents, eating out for Thanksgiving. As we went out outside after eating, a P-38 flew over towards the airport. It was Glacier Girl. I had a special feeling just looking at it in the museum, being right next to it, looking up under the wings. Just sent chills down my spine, but that feeling is 10 fold seeing it fly. I wish I had my camera then too. I have many pictures of it in the hanger, but I want some of it in the air, and videos of it flying.
I got this 1:64 scale metal model at the museum last summer:

Glacier Girl was purchased by Provenence Fighter Sales and moved to California at the end of last year.
Here's a bit on the flight over the pond.

GG is not in Chino anymore, she was seen in Texas last week.
Britt, can you add to this or correct it?
And did you get pics of GG with the POF P-38?

Wasn't it only moved to California just to get the updates for the flight? The museum's website has no news about it being sold or permantely moved. However they didn't post that it was going to be flying in November either, nor do they have anything up about the flight to England. I hope it will remain in Middlesboro though, and its just being updated for the flight to England this Summer. The article you posted stated that its home base is still in Middlesboro.

I didn't hear this from the owner, so its all 2nd hand.
Article was presale, I believe.
Heres more quotes:
According to the latest printings, she was supposed to join the "permanent" collection of Provenance, along with the ex-Gary Kohs Corsair. Bob Cardin was even supposed to move out to California to take care of her, and Hinton was still her only pilot. Someone also posted yesterday that she is going to be flying with the PoF Lightning sometime soon. Provenance is based out of French Valley Airport now.

Subject: Glacier Girl
Hello,
I need your help. I participate in the Warbird Information Exchange forum.
There’s a quite lengthy discussion going on, at this time, about future plans for Glacier Girl. The discussion started because of a rumor that Glacier Girl would be going to Duxford for the Flying Legends airshow in July. The discussion started out as a “would she or wouldn’t she” and has evolved into a “should she or shouldn’t she”.
Would you be kind enough to tell me/us if there is such a plan?
I will, of course, understand if you should simply say, “None of your business”.
Kindest regards,
Brad
Here's the answer I got:
The plan is that Glacier Girl will fly to England this summer to retrace its
original mission.
Thanks
Simon Brown

Hey thanks for all the info. I don't like it IF it is moving to California, but any news you get I'd like to hear it. I figured they would leave it in Middlesboro due to the man that made sure it got recovered and restored was from the area. Like I said, thanks for the info.

Hopefully PoF got to fly with GG, and Britt got some sweet pics. :fingerscrossed:
That would make perfect comparison pics of early vs late P-38's.

I've got some pics I found online of "Glacier Girl" with "Porky II".
Also to kevrut, how is the Dayton airshows? I think my family may be going to it this year, I want to know how good of a show it usually is.

To bdr_ws6;
I've only been there that one time. I enjoyed it alot. It was the first big airshow that I've ever been to. There was plenty to check out.
I toured the Memphis Belle. There were about 6 or 7 Zeros there doing a Pearl Harbor reenactment. A 2nd P-38, Corsair, Mustang, B-25, and a lot of modern stuff. I also took a Huey ride.
I haven't been back since then. I'm going to look it up soon to see who all is scheduled to be there this year.
It's nice to see another P-38 fan here.
Kevin.

This year the Thunderbirds are scheduled, but its the same weekend as Oshkosh I think, and I am afraid it would hurt the chances of having a lot of vintage birds there. I know theres going to be a lot of USAF stuff there too as its part of the 60th anni shows.
