F-4 PHANTOM ON HORIZON?

I heard some gossip recently from a far more accompished modeler than I ever aspired to be about upcoming F-4 navy and marine offerings from one of the the respected companies on this board. It should be offered with a full complement of ordnance and should retail for about twice what the f-18's go for. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY GOSSIP BUT TO ME SOUNDED LIKE MORE THAN WISHFULL THINKING. Don't rip me apart yet as a gulllible dork, maybe something may be revealed at the upcoming show, maybe not.

if true you're talking about a $170 price point. Doubtful from any of the big 3.

It would be sweet to see one, but I am with Aferg on this one. The price point would make it pretty tough to make it viable for the big 3--most retailers would balk at the price needed to cover the cost. The only one I could see even considering it, based on past offerings, would be bbi, and they seem to be having some serious frustrations with distribution here in the US.

I have also heard this, I also heard that and F-14 was in the mix. But it just may turn out to be just that,….. a rumor

WM has a hard enoung time selling $40 fighters and $70 Avengers. Maybe an online only item but I doubt it.

Actually I think they sell pretty well for the number poeple that are interested - I mean come on WM keeps re-ordering them - then we hear WM is complaining they cant get them from 21st when they need them?
Now flooding the market with too many of them and letting them sit without a discount is the big issue....
They appear to have wised up with the Migs - market was flooded - as with the Avenger and well they did the right thing - move them out for the next plane. And the next plane we are starting to see are the S3 Migs and Huffs - we will probably see a small wave at first then boom a flood - next cycle? who knows? 104s? P38s?
ok hmm I forgot what the point of this was....

I really don't think that Phantoms would sit on the shelves too long. I know the F-104s didn't last long where I'm at. I really think that if somebody did an F-4, it would sell big time. I know that personally of all fighter jets I would like to see done, it would be an F-4. You would have a TON of paint schemes possible, and I would die for an RAF F-4. It just is a bad-ass looking bird that would show really well on the shelf. It would be just about impossible to pass on!!

I'll repeat what I've said for years: A 1:18 F-4 would be the crown jewel of my collection.
I hope that one of the manufacturers has the marbles to take this one on.

An F-4 would be awesome. Plus it would mean great hope for an A-10 and the like but at this point I don't believe it. All we seem to be seeing are smaller jets. I can't see an F-4 being done when there are subjects like the A-4, F-84, F-9, and of course the F-5 to name a few.
Like Fierodude posted earlier, bbi is the only one I can see making an offering like this at this point and from the way Mike talks it is very doubtful....

well the A-1 is some what big its about the same size as the Avenger, so in a way they are getting bigger.

so maybe we will se some bigger aircraft over the next few years

Absolutely agree! I believe these would sell very well, even if they were only available at on-line toy and hobby retailers.

The Starfighters are still collecting dust in my AO. I would certainly buy an F4 bit I'd rather have a Thud!

This is a very recognizable plane, known by many people of the U.S. armed forces as well as those of many other nations that flew the Phantom. I too agree that if a company (probably bbi) were to produce the F-4 in 1/18 scale it would sell very well. I would certainly add a couple to my fleet.
I do hope that the "gossip" that mikeg has heard has some truth to it, and for all we know it may. To close I will borrow a line from Mike at bbi and say I guess we'll have to "wait and see".

Man that would be a big plane, but could pave the way for the much loved A-10 & F-14. I seriously doubt it also, especially since the Avengers haven't seemed to move very well. I suspect it is the higher price point that is slowing sales. I suspect most of us would pay the price for one of these great birds but the general public may be more price sensitive.

Just to clarify, I'm not doubtful, but very optimistic that the F-4 will grace us in 1/18 scale. I think its just a matter of time. (Hopefully not too long!)

IT would be HUGE! somewhere in in the neighborhood of 3.5 - 4 feet long! I just don't know how it could be done given the space and cost issues involved. I would not complain about having one though. An F-4 with moving control surfaces, ordinance, folding wingtips and everything else could be the BIG project we have all been asking for. I sounds like a "race to the moon" kind of project to me. Could it be done? well yeah, but it will take tons of money and lots of risk but doing it could be the glory of planting a flag on moon.
There has been alomst as much rumor and speculation of the F-4 as there has been for the A-10. And we still have not seen the A-10. We even know that the hog has been prototyped but still no sign of full production. So it is really hard to say. On one hand it seems like a pipe dream but on the other hand 21c seems to flirt with the idea of BIG BIG birds! I think our chances are about 50 / 50 honestly.

And when will that be? 10-15-20 years
Some of us on this board are old already ...

Maybe I shouldn't read into things so much, but tko's mention of the A-10 makes me wonder what 21C has up their sleeve. The timing of the comment, and lack of until now.....well, I must say is interesting.
Oh how I would love a HOG

We're getting closer, at least. The Skyraider gives me hope, if nothing else in the spirit of the plane.
