Im also planning to get one, photos would be very appreciated.

What is the difference between the two besides the number?

Difference

Post by Folkwulfe » Thu Jan 25, 2007 9:48 pm

Supposedly, the only difference is the "buzz" number on the sides. Taylor and Welch (as well as a few others) got airborne in P-40C's...or early Tomahawks as they were called. Just before Xmas, I found a "Sky Captain" P-40 missing the pilot and got it for around $25.00 with the intention of repainting into Taylor or Welch's aircraft. Imagine my surprise when I read the 21C announcement shortly afterward! The P-40 is (I believe) the same one released earlier, just repainted. If so, you're going to find some of the features less than scale. In particular, the canopy hood is way too wide, but I understand why they did it that way for strength. The L/G is also somewhat...funny? The ailerons, elevators, and rudder do not move. It does have nice flaps though. However...being the only game in town for large scale P-40's it's still pretty good for the money.

I usually to avoid these types of threads so I don't show my bias or appear to be "plugging" but emotion has gotten the best of me tonight. This is my favorite airplane(s) released to date of any XD.

Why?

The paint is historically perfect. The history surrounding Dec. 7th and the historical significance of this plane is unquestioned. The unbelievable gallantry of these pilots facing incredible odds, overcoming fear, kicking some booty, and surviving. Then the aircraft itself is just plain classy. Could you imagine owning your own full scale P-40? Ah, dreams . . . but what great dreams they are!

If I could only have 1 XD . . .

I have not taken my number 316 from the box to do any photos but I can tell you that from seeing the samples at 21c and looking through the plastic of the one that I own I observed the following:

The plane is a very simple scheme but it looks so good on the P-40! The color is perfect and the light weathering really sets it apart.

Also as Bad Cat pointed out... how you NOT get at least one of these from a historical perspective? What these guys did for our our country in a most desperate hour is just amazing! I think I will display mine proudly in the best way I can think.... Pumping hot lead lead into my Pearl Harbor painted Zero!!!!

You mean you have a non-21c aircraft in your collection  Traitor

Great use for the P-40B, though! Kind of cool to have two 1:18 aircraft (even if from different companies) that at least were in the same part of the sky on the same day and may have actually engaged each other since the BBI Zero was shot down in the Pearl Harbor attack

Not a huge fan of the P-40 but i'll have to get one of these too. I'm a sucker for the 'overwhelming odds' theme. It will fit in well with my DWK Battle of Britain Spitfire, my candy cane FW-190D (which although technically it probably saw no combat, it still represents to me the final desperate months for Germany) and my PZL P-11c i had comissioned a couple of years ago, in the markings of the Polish pilot who committed the first ramming attack of the war.

Perhaps i need to see someone about these 'annihilation fantasies' i keep having. :)

ImageI wouldn’t worry about it too much. We’re all a little crazy here.

I recommend this one to those who have been holding out on a P-40, the box alone is beautiful! Thanks 21st!!!!

OK, I give in. Even though I'm not into planes all that much (I do have a few though), I've heard so much kudos about these guys, that I'm gonna have to ante up and get them. :D

When someone gets one, please post pics. I'm curious to see if they fixed this mold or not.
Thanks!

I'm a big fan of George Welch but I think I'll pass on this one. The model itself is just too outdated, no matter how historically exciting the repaint. If it was a retool or a P-40F or later then believe me I'd buy two.

As far as I can tell, the mold is the same.

I think Tko had implied that the Zero had been shelved. With the PH Zero still not sold out at BCA you can't blame the reluctance of AT and 21C to proceed with their Zeros.
I think vmf214 has a chance to see the Kate still. Afterall, if AT put all that work into a 1/32 version it could make sense to also mold a 1:18 version...which I still think would be an awesome sight. And torpedo's do make a "splash" as Jason has said AT would shortly..

I think the Zero would've been a good candidate for WM distribution. It's a readily recognized plane if by nothing more than the meatballs. The 32xw zero's in my AO flew off the shelves, no pun intended. What I remember about 21st's 1/18 project was that it was a A6M3, with clipped wings which I liked. The BBi PH zero was a BCT exclusive, the green one never to my knowledge showed up at any TRU's, only online. So , with that said, who knows how well a 1/18 zero would do if offered to the general public. Amazing how many folks don't buy online, don't have a computer, etc. If 21st is gauging the release of a 1/18 zero based on BCT's PH zero still being available etc, my opinion, not a sound basis in which to make the decision of to be, or, not to be...just my 2 cents.

Although, I do agree it'll likely not come to pass. I think we'll see someone make an A-10 first... :P Sorry guys, couldn't resist.. :)

Yeah, I think 21c has moved on to other projects. Kinda too bad. I would have preferred a 21c offering. Oh well, My PH zero will have to do! Besides it will make nice target practice for Taylor and Welch

I believe you are correct on this digger. The real shame is the fact that the Zero is just about the finest 1:18 plane made, considering all of the detailing on it (the Avenger is right on par, though, hehehe).....

Sorry for bringing up an old topic, but does anyone have any out of box photos of the P-40?

why wait-

Post by mikeg » Fri Apr 27, 2007 6:57 pm

I saw both at walmart a couple of days ago, only one of each- no more ac. I already have several p40's, so I left em. If I had the spare cash, I would have bought them, what the hell-

Same here, I have 3 P-40's already, I have one on preorder waiting to be shipped with the SBD. I bought it just for the box artwork.
