1/18-ish A-7 Corsair found

Post by aferguson » Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:21 am

I just stumbled across this one. An r/c foam model by Flying Styro. Their stuff is quite nice. Anyway, wingspan -wise it's a hair over 1/18 and length-wise it's about 1/20 (a concession to its r/c nature) but the overall look is quite nice i think.

Comes with ordnance, is pre-painted and has decals. I think with some easy modifications a decent single seat version could be made from this....the simplest approach might just be to paint over the rear canopy but more sophisticated mods are possible too.

This kit has been out of production for about 6 years so they are now getting a bit rare, from my understanding.

Here's a link to an ebay one:

and here are some links to some build threads with some good pics of the finished model...note these models are finished without the ordnance under the wings:

I think this is one of those planes that everyone likes and is historically significant but that we'll likely never see in 1/18 scale plastic. I would be very surprised if we did, at any rate.

$100 for foam? Geez

Still, it looks pretty cool. Someone around here needs to pick it up and give it a try.

Now that's a nice RC job! Would make a great display. The rear cockpit would be an easy fix. I miss the ole cranial eaters, I cut my teeth on that bird (yes I'm old). :D

BTW, Aferg you could buy the kit and resell the fan if just going to build a display.

VMF214: When ejecting from the A-7, did the canopy fly off first or did the seat smash through it, breaking it in the process?
