the seller is in Canada. I've emailed him for confirmation of the dimensions. I will see if he lives in Toronto and if so will go take a look at the thing for myself if i can.

The seller is in Canada but it seems the item is in HK. That explains the $50 shipping.

Could this be another Admiral Toys product leak? Similar to the F5 agressor?

From what I have come up with converting the dimensions given for the model and the dimensions given in the real tank's description on the ebay listing, it's underscaled like the other one. Probably 1/24 again. Oh well.......

Good luck Aferg.

..plus it's quite possible the dimensions are for the box the model comes in, not the model itself. That's quite common.

If that's the case, then it might be smaller than 1/24 scale. The box would have to at least be larger than the tank body itself. I wouldn't think a model like this would come unassembled. If the measurments of the real tank that were given were of a Type 98 excluding the barrel, tfrom the conversions I get the box would have to be longer than 24 inches or 609 mm to hold just the body of one in 1/18 scale.

Hope maybe I'm wrong here.

well the dimensions given for the model do seem 1/18 scale to me. The width is just under 12 feet and the dimension of 198mm is just under 8 inches. Which is correct. The length is probably just the hull length and that seems correct to me as well. The height probably includes the machine gun.

Anyway, i heard back and here is what i rec'd:

"I just double check the product information. The scale is 1:18. The box size is 410x260x300mm"

So, it would seem the box is a little bigger than the tank model. The turret may be turned backwards or the gun barrel removed for packaging.

I think it is possible that it's 1/18.

I've asked where he lives and if in Toronto if i can go inspect one. Reply pending...

Having done all this i'm not even sure if i want one. Don't know what i'd do with a Chinese tank. I could cover the turret in reactive armour and then it would make a pretty good T-80 as the hull is the same i believe.

It's possible that this is 1/20 and not 1/18 too. It could be a diecast knock off of the 1/20 trumpeter kit.

Check this out:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... -specs.htm

It says that the 11m is the hull only.

So, wouldn't the conversion go like this:

11m = 36.09 ft.

36.09 ft. = 24.06 in. in 1/18

24.06 in. = 611.1 mm

I think the 1/20 scale assumption or smaller would be pretty good.

there's no way the hull of that tank is 11m. That's nearly 36 feet.

It's based on the T-80 which has a hull a little over 20 feet long. So with all due respect to globalsecurity, they made a mistake.

The 11m probably refers to the overall length, including gun barrel overhang.

My whole Chinese/Hong Kong seller or distributor paranoia is kicking in again. A part of me would be tempted out of sheer morbid curiosity--the price for the tank itself is tolerable, but not the shipping.

usually the hong kong sellers charge huge shipping as a way of paying less ebay fees and as a way of attracting buyers with lower prices. $90 odd dollars is really not a bad price for this tank, shipped, if it's what it claims to be...assuming one is interested in ths subject matter.

Here's more information on the Type 98, didn't see anything about the hull measurement in my quick scan through the material.

Key words being "if it's what it claims to be". After the runaround we went through with the last one, I tend to be a bit suspicious...

From what I have been reading, it looks like the Type 98 is a Frankenstein in design from aspects of the T-72 and the T-80. Here's a run down I found on T-72 specs.

The other thing I find ironic, regarding shipping fees, is not only have I usually been able to get my oddball figures shipped pretty cheaply from Hong Kong and Japan (YesAsia even had free shipping on some!), but I recently ordered a regulator for my airbrush compressor on e-bay, and it shipped airmail out of Hong Kong for $8, even though it was easily a couple pounds. It's reminiscent of those RCtanks for $29 but with $70 shipping. Or you get them through some of the regular sites for $79 with free shipping...

HK tank

Post by digger » Sat Jan 06, 2007 11:51 am

Yea, it's too small. And another AFV he has listed he admits is 1:24. I like how he offers a discount if the first bidder wins - just hoping to get one sucker. Notice he doesn't mention the make? Then you could look it up yourself...it's sad that the growing interest in 1:18 is bringing out the scammers.

Besides, let's say 21C put out a 1:18 type 98 with no figure and wanted $100...would it really be worth it? :?

not sure why you're saying it's too small. 390mm is about 14 inches and change which is about 22 feet, which sounds right for this tank, being based on the russian T-80, as i said. As i recall the hull was slightly stretched on the Chinese version. The width seems exactly right to me.

The seller has 100% feedback; if he were 'suckering' people i don't think he would.

And i can see the uniqueness of the piece being worth extra money to many armour collectors. I know of a couple of members that paid a lot more than this for a 1/18 resin kit of a JSIII and they have to assemble it, paint it etc..

Aferg,

Have you heard anymore from the ebay seller?

Is he agreeing to let you come over and look at it first hand?

If he has one on hand, see if he will take it out of the box and take some pictures with a measuring tape beside it like the other seller finally did with the other tank and send them to you. If he's on the up and up, I can't see why he would have a problem with doing that. The seller all the way over in China did. It might save you a wasted trip. Then we can all put this to rest and maybe put some orders in.

Dimensions of the real tank from the ebay listing, just scroll down to find it and more.

Dimension: Length: 11.00m; Height: 2.20m; Width: 3.40m

Does this sound right. I'm assuming the length is with the main gun forward.

Just had a bad thought after rereading the kit vs real dimensions. The kit dimensions as given have the hight vs width as too square. I think those are for the tank on the shown pedestal, which would make it way under scale for 1/18.

i assumed the anomolly in height is due to the fact it was measured to the top of the machine gun or searchlight....which would make it appear artificially too tall. But it's possible that it was measured on the base i guess.

The bottom line is that until someone who knows what they're talking about sees one of these in real life, we're not going to know 100% for sure if it's 1/18 or not.

The seller hasn't responded again, so he may not want people coming to his place..
