Just another good example of what makes the A-10 Warthog so kick a$$!!!

Can't keep a good plane down.

Thanks for the video link BOSS HOGG.

I hope someone brings us the A-10 in 1/18 scale. It's way overdue in my opinion....

Remember the definition of "expert"....ex=former, (s)pert=water leak under high pressure; heck, they are "all wet". As effecient as the Warthog is, that in itself makes it beautiful!!

I read somewhere a while back that the Army had hinted at taking the A-10 into its inventory if the USAF sent the Beast to the chopping block. Does anyone know if that was true or not?

I had this song blasting thru my Ipod all last summer before last...Im a big fan of Nickelback and there couldn't be a more appropriate soundtrack! I remember watching these bad asses fly over myrtle beach when they had a base there. The A-10 is definitely on my acquisition list!

To answer lsc1002's question, yes, there was talk around the early 90's about the Army getting possession of the warthog fleet. Well I can actually see the A-10 following the career path of the B-52 for service length. Sometimes I wonder if the phasing out of perfectly good and updateable aircraft is just another conspiracy for the services to buy more super expensive techno-shmeckno toys. I think if our current fleet of tactical aircraft were given a simple upgrade of TVC engines, they could handle 5th generation threats. The 15, 16, and 18 have had TVC engines tested successfully.

From what I've read, that was kicked around when the USAF was looking at retiring the A-10. The US Army didn't want to loose the best CAS aircraft and the USAF wanted to replace the A-10 with F-16s. This all changed after the A-10's performance in recent conflicts. The A-10 has had a tough political fight, but it has always proven itself. With the recent upgrades A-10As are going through to be turned into A-10Cs, plans are to keep it in the USAF inventory until 2028.

Since we're on the subject heres a sweet Youtube vid off my faves list of a A10 close air support mission after an ambush in Afghanistan. Love that sound, and the delay between seeing the smoke and hearing the canon. You can see him dropping flares as he pulls out too.

Guy on the ground says the F word once or twice so be warned.

Just found a nice little video of an A10 shooting. Not war footage as the name suggests but still cool.

Search for Heritage Flight to see Mustangs flying with Raptors, cool stuff.

You couldn't be more correct Mig29K. In the case of the A-10, you may notice that sometimes you see the designation OA-10. These are A-10s that have been assigned the role of FAC (Forward Air Control). The only difference between an A-10 and an OA-10 is the armament carried. The reason for this designation change to some A-10s: the USAF declared the A-10 obsolete for its role and this was in the late 80s. They declared it obsolete and changed the designation on some A-10s to create room in the CAS role for more technoloically advanced F-16 purchases. They could have simply done then what they are doing now, upgrade the A-10. Either way the A-10 keeps proving them wrong. It has proven to be one of the most versatile aircraft in the USAF by excellling in every role and task it has been given. That is what makes it so beautiful.

Now that would be awesome to see BOSS HOGG. One generation to the next. Hope he gets a slot in the aircraft he wants.

What better to compliment your souveniers than an A-10 in 1/18 scale... :D

A-10

The sound of an A10 is unique for sure. I first heard them right after 9-11 flying over Camp Atterbury.

I just wish I had my video camera with me at the time!!

I'd be interested in any history of the A-10 supporting Marine units. I've got to believe if there were some way to bottle up an A-10 and put it on a boat that the Marines would wet themselves.

Below are two links from the Air Force's website. The first talks about A-10s supporting Marines and the second is a letter written to the Air Force by a Marine Sgt. clearly from his experience with the A-10. (Look for A-10 Warthog letter by USMC 1st Sgt. Stephen Lyon)

http://www.af.mil/news/airman/0503/world.html

http://www.af.mil/letters/index.asp?page=55

Other things I've read mention the A-10 supporting the Marines many times in both Desert Storm and current Iraq/Afghanistan operations. I have a friend that served in the Marines during Desert Storm and he told me about a the first time his unit had an A-10 give them air support. He said they all heard this whining sound in the clouds and were wondering what the? Then an A-10 popped out of the clouds and completely obliterated the building they were taking fire from with it's 30mm. He said after that, they all wanted the A-10 when they needed air support.

Thanks! I love reading about real-world actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's awesome to see the A-10 performing every task it is assigned with lethal efficiency. Also great to know the people who wanted to axe it are getting a pie in the face so to speak.
