MiG 15 education

Help; I know nothing about Russian aircraft (along with the Japanese types), and I see all the excitement and activity regarding the MiG 15 offerings.......help.....If I were to purchase just one MiG 15, which one should I "go for" and why? The Camo model really looks great, but I need some input. Thanks for and direction and suggestions!

The (S-1) or NK is "classic" in it's own right as well ,... but I'm just not too impressed with it for some odd reason. Maybe because it's just North Korean or something. I'm sure others will have a completely different observation. Some may not be impressed with the (S-2) version like I already know of one "fellow board-member" who is'nt. It's a matter of "eye-candy" I guess ,... but you can let your imagination take over and turn any one of these MiGs into a "honcho".

Buy whichever one you like, especially if you have no preference.

I can personally say that I own both, NK & Chinese, and I have to say that the Tiger stripe Chinese is my favorite between the two. The S-3, Russian, to me appears to close to the NK in color so the stripes are really striking and add much more character to the aircraft with the paint schema.

I own the NK version (which is my overall favorite) and also like the S3 version. All are accurate schemes, but like the other members said, the Russian version and the NK version are the "classic" silver Mig schemes. The North Korean S1 Mig was also flown by Russia's leading ace during the Korean War: Col Peplyayev, who I think had over 20 aerial victories. Thats just one more reason why I like that particular scheme

Thank you for the input you guys......I said that I was a Luftwaffe fan only, along with the US and Brit, of coarse....and that I would NEVER buy anything Japanese, then came the Pearl Harbor Zero-got that and really love it: Now the Russian (never interested, just as I said about the Japanese) and I simply have to have one or two of these MiG 15's.

Excellent input regarding the NK and the Russian Ace, but the Camo is SO different, I am really leaning in that direction at the moment. REMEMBER, NEVER SAY "NEVER"......these 1/18 scale babes are really persuasive and make one do VERY strange things, which, of coarse, are all related to the wallet and spending!!! Now, with that said, I have to confess: I would not have it any other way

And last but not least, an added ripple in the proverbial pond: a USAF F-86 CERTAINLY has to come into my picture to complete this equation...cannot have a MiG 15 sortie without an F-86 victory, can I???!!!
THAT is unthinkable

Jim, the North Korean version of the 21st Century MIG-15 is an awesome looking model. This is one plane that will look good no matter what the paint scheme is. I have it parked next to my F-86 on my desk, and what a great looking pair they are. Yes, you will want the 21st Century F-86 also. You can never have to many Sabres!

I thought maybe I wouldn't buy the NK as to the current political issues, but hey it's a toy and I grabbed as soon as I saw one

As for only buying a particular genre or airforce/ country, why?

Buy what you like and what strikes your fancy! On my 1/18 cars I buy what I like or is cool or different. Like a Nash, farm tractors, hay trailers, 3 wheeled french Citroens, variety!

Something I dislike is the collectors who only buy specifics, like the matchbox guys, some have 100's of the same car (BORING) buy everybody is different and has diferent passions.

I really like the different paint scheme the 1:18th models are offered in. To me it is neat to see the history behind the paint schemes. Now, if I could only have an F-86 in the paint scheme of every county that used them. NICE!

i guess it depends on what is important to you in a model. If you want a scheme with some history behind it then the NK version and Chinese versions are the way to go. Both saw much combat during the Korean conflict.

The Russian scheme may be the 'classic' but it saw no active combat while in service. You could always wait til a Mig 21 comes out to get a jet in Russian markings.
