I was looking at some 1:18th scale models, and they say they have tampo printed markings. Does anyone know what that is? Is it how the markings are applied to models?

yes....it's the way virtually all prefab models have their markings put on, they are not decals.....essentially they are printed on.

This is the process of making decal like markings on things that are printed on instead of decals. Each color is a step, just like silk screening. Like using a rubber stamp. Stamps are laser cut, so even fine detail can be printed.
All the diecast racing cars are done in this process, the ink is alcohol based, which allows for fast drying. The cars or whatever are put on a circular table with different stations, each station has a different color or marking. The product starts at 1....and goes around the table until printing is complete. Wala!!!!! finished product.
Hope this helps
