EMERGENCY PLAN AND NEW TEMP FORUM

Post by aferguson » Sun Aug 27, 2006 11:32 am

It seems that we're about to lose the forum. Nobody has seen or heard from P-51 in some time and i have no idea what is up but we need to make a contigency plan.

A temporary board has been set up where we can meet for information, should we lose this one. Link in post below.

Gang, I got ahold of the person that owns the domain name warbird-photos.com

He is in the process of renewing and will let us know when it has been taken care of.

Provided that is the problem some of you have been encountering, that should fix everything.

Checking in, Aferg thanks for setting up the emergency board. I'm having trouble registering, but hopefully this site will continue. Grunt, thank you for looking into the domain name. I'd happily contribute to the necessary fees to keep the board running if needed.

I still think this is a 'wake up' call for us. We should get organised as a group, take up a collection 'membership fees' and get our own mega-website that's owned by the group, and run by a committee. :D

Many years ago we kicked in some $ to GP to continue his site. I'd certainly be willing to do it again, even on a yearly basis. Ain't no place else I'd rather be. Bob

count me in if thats what it will take to secure this place, this seems to be the "norm" lately as it appears several of us may also be losing another fine place (ModelHangar, but for different reasons) so it's getting to be a dog eat dog world and we need to hold on to these fabulous sites, whatever the cost.

I'm here to help in anyway I can as well. I don't want to see this great place go down either.

If it comes to a monetary contribution to keep the forum alive, I'm in.

Whatever it takes.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, I think it is way too quick to jump the gun here and all of a sudden close up shop here. Britt (P51) stepped up to the challenge and provided us with a terrific forum to discuss our hobby in. In the end, did anything happen to this forum? Nope, it is still here and it will be. This forum is linked into the Planes of Fame Museum Website and I don't think the adminstrators of that site would allow their museum website to be shut down. Just a thought. I am amazed at the lack of loyalty on this forum. I never had the problem, and could easily log in. There are going to be techincal issues and little quirks when you are using message boards. Just because this site wasn't renewed right away doesn't mean we should all jump ship. You could go to another domain name or another web server and have loads more problems. This website is self sufficent, we don't have to maintain it and someone was nice enough to set the entire thing up for everyone out of their own time. Give the guy a little credit and remember, the forum is still here.

I do think a few things need to change on this forum, first of all, I feel we need at least two or three more moderators. Some of the discussion in this forum recently has been of poor taste, poor judgement and is borderline out of control, period. We need to better police what people say on this forum and the way they conduct their business. I'm not saying Aferg and Teamski don't do a good job, I am just saying I think they could use help.

Another thing that needs to change is the way we add members. I honestly think the new members should have to contact the moderators before being allowed, then the moderators add their username, etc. This would stop the nonsense of porn sites and other crap that has been posted here lately. The forum should be locked to outside people, not saying they can't look, just saying they can't post without being approved by the moderators, this would prevent a ton of problems.

As for that modelhangar forum, they acted like idoits over there. I feel they shut themselves down by acting the way they did. It is their own fault it was shut down and some of their garbage even spilled over to our forum which was totally ridculous. All that griping and complaining over a toy. Come on! Get a life! There are tons of bigger problems in the world than that. They did it to themselves. As I mentioned to someone on here a little while ago, some people on here act worse than some of my little ones in my classroom.

No offense Corey, but you obviously aren't aware of what actually transpired today. It isn't a lack of loyalty by any means, and for you to accuse us of such, offends me to no end. I have always been a loyal supporter to this forum. Today, we find out that the domain account was past due which meant we had no means of having a forum at all. P51 has not been heard from in a while so of course, we assumed the worse and we only want to ensure we have our forum alive and kicking.

What transpired today brought back memories of the old GP closing. At least then, we had warnings galore (thanks to GP!) with a link to the new forums but, today, when we received past due accounts messages, we had no "Plan B" to fall to. You can't fault us for asking the question, what can we do to prevent the forum from closing.

MK,

But do you honestly think that the Planes of Fame museum would allow their domains to be closed and their websites to be closed when they are a educational and aircraft institution known throughout the world for their airplanes and their vast collection of avaition artifacts. I mean seriously, come on already. This forum is part of their website, Britt made their website. That means if their website goes down, or their forget to renew their domain name, this site will also go down.

The truth is, this could happen to anyone anywhere. I have a feeling the domain name was in the process of being renewed and did just not happen quickly enough and that is why you got the notice you did. This happens sometimes on school district websites too, they forget to renew their domains or the sites get switched, then you get messages like that. The forum was probably never in danger of being closed. The only way domains get closed off on major webpages is if people don't pay for like a long time. I have a strong feeling it was in the process of being renewed, or someone at Planes of Fame just didn't have the authority to do it or something like that. As for Britt, the guy is probably busy, and he probably can't even renew the forum himself, it's probably someone at Planes of Fame who has the authority.

Regarding our own private forum, that would never work, period. I can give several reasons it wouldn't work. It wouldn't work because if you made people pay some people would cry and bitch about that. If it was a private forum and there were rules or as someone suggested you had to pay to trade people would complain about that. Then we all know that there are some people that would complain on here period, plain and simple.

If you guys would ever decide to go the private forum route, I would gladly support the entire first year of the bill. Reason being, I like you guys and I think it is a cool forum. Even though I don't have a lot of money, I'd do it. I'm a generous person, yet I know some folk just seeing the fact it might have to be "paid" for in the future were behind the scenes complaining.

What has disappointed me in this forum is exactly what I said before, the lack of common sense displayed in some of the posts here. I am totally amazed that some people are crying the blues about what happened today, about getting a bent gun barrel and other things when there is so much more serious stuff going on in the world. I invite you to see what kind of mood you're in after you've witnessed the woman you love getting crunched by a car, sitting by her lifeless body for a week, getting very little sleep and then coming on the forum to see the kind of nonsense being posted that has been posted here recently.

So sorry if you are offended by what I said MK, I meant no offense to you, but there are some people here that have greatly offended me by the nonsense posted here recently. And simply put, I've had it!

The board went up and down periodically throughout the day, so to some people it would look like everything was running fine, if they happened to come here when the board was up.

To others it appeared that the board no longer existed, if they tried to come here at the wrong time...and still others were able to get on some times but not others.

It was clearly a way of phasing out the domain name in stages, to give us a chance to do just exactly what we did....make alternate plans.

For now the problem is abaited and it's business as usual, so any further discussion should be focused on looking forward, and what should be done (if anything) to prevent this from happening again.

No one is suggesting disloyalty to Britt but the simple fact is he is the one and only holding the keys to place and if something happens that he no longer comes here, we are sunk. It has been since May that Britt visited the board, to my knowledge, so i am beginning to think the worst.

Whatever the reason for his absence, it is not a terrible idea to have some sort of a back up plan. That said there are all kinds of problems that can happen with commitees. See my comments in the 'what's up with this' thread. Plus i do still hate to do anything without Britt in the loop, but i guess it doesnt hurt to at least plan a bit.

how about some 'universal phone book' or something, where we could have the member list and their contact info? This would be optional, of course, and on a differrent page.

Aferg,

You say its business as usual, but is this only a temp fix (ie a week? a month?) Or are we groovy for the next year or so?

Man, today had me panicing - what to do for my toy fix. I remembered your post, Aferg, about not being able to contact Britt a few weeks ago. Didn't think we'd get a surprise like this

Actually, I blame the fact that Saturday I made my 1,000 post. Must have made the system puke knowing I've spouted that much crud.

as i understand it the domain has been renewed for a full year again.

I was never under the impression this site was connected to the Warbird museum. The domain name doesn't really suggest that it is....if it were the domain would be www.warbirdmuseum.com/photos not www.warbird-photos.com

I thought it was connected to Britts private photography business...as it turns out Britt is not the owner of the domain name. A friend of his owns it.

Aferg, thanks for your post. It summed up what happened today nicely and I think covered what most of us were thinking. We all want this forum to succeed.

Corey, I accept your apology and I have no hard feelings towards you. When my loyalty is in question, I do stand up and defend myself. If you meant "common sense" rather than "loyalty", then that is a horse of a different color. As for the Planes of Fame museum allowing themselves to lose their domain, I have no idea who or what they are (Not all of us are plane buffs) so of course panic would ensue. :D
