I know some of you guys have multiples of our 21C stuff, some of you have MANY copies of the same piece.
Not including the different paint versions, why do you buy them?
Are they for possible investment?
Are they for the sake of collecting?
Are they because you can't think of any other way to spend money?
For myself, I buy multiples of my toys for very few reasons:
They are cheap (on super sale clearance) and I keep them to resell or trade later.
I will use them in groups. This is primarily my 1/6 figures that I kit bash into a crew for a vehicle making slight changes on each one.
In other markets (Dragon, DID, Sideshow) I will buy multiples of limited production items at list price or higher, to keep for myself or resell in the future. This depends on what I have in my wallet to spend on birthdays, other gift occasions, home repairs or nowadays a tank of gasoline.
How about youzze?

Hey TTT this is a very good question
For myself,it`s more to do with Actual Unit strengths.
For instance:-
My German Armour consists of:-
4 Panzer MK IVs (One Euro,3 S1s),2 Tigers (1 Grey & 1 Winter).
The tanks moreso the Tigers were gotten at very good prices (from board members too),the MKIV`s again some from Board members & some as part payment for commissioned work on custom figure. I think the Panzer MK IV is the only one I`ve paid full price for (though that`s a nice piece to have

).
I can operate my 2 Tigers in deployment with 2 MK IVs being assigned to each Tiger>Gives a solid PUNCH power with excellent protection IMO.
Another,I have 4 DPVs,why well we know US SEALs operate in units of 2 or more when using DPVs,so I`ve followed that principle.Plus the PTE DPV is the best on the market & is very cheap too
BBI Helo`s I have only 1 of each, though must admit I want to get a PAVEHAWK sometime

So my BBI Kiowa works alongside the Apache covering the Blackhawk transport
The BBI littlebird not sure yet, thinking I may have to make some IDF troops & redo colour on the helo to match IDF colours & markings
PTE LittleBirds I have 2 as there more accurate than the BBI one (for US use) & also "cheap as chips"
Jeeps,You can never have enough Jeeps as there`s so many configurations & Nations & markings to do with them

(Though I only have 3 myself...LOL).
Figure wise, well that`s down to Squad building then isn`t it.
So there you have it really, semi realism, semi Cheap prices really

The things I have multilpes of are:
M113 (4 or 5)
Got most of them to do conversions to:
1 - VN ACAV Conversion (complete)
1 - VN Recoiless Rifle carrier (complete)
1 - to keep as a modern NATO version
1 - to do as an ITV (someday)
1 - Secret project
LAV-25 (4)
Got three of them on clearance
To repaint as NATO woodland camo (1 complete)
M-1 Abrams (2)
Got one on clearance
Will repaint as NATO Woodland camo
AH-64 (4)
Got three on clearance to put different markings on (shark's teeth, etc), but haven't done yet.
AH-1Z (4)
Bought three loose ones from a friend and fellow collector who was having financial problems.
Mechanical Mule kits (2)
Bought them to do conversions on:
1 - TOW Carrier
1 - Recoiless Rifle Carrier (using the recoiless rifle from the BBI Super Humvee)
F-104 (2)
Got an extra to do a custom paint job on
Otherwise, I've tried to be very frugal in my collecting (mostly because my space was already shrunk from 1/6 collecting - which is why I got into 1/18 - to get more variety into a space (and the wider variety of vehicles))

A few reasons. First off, when I got started buying SW again ('95), I had flashbacks as a kids of a 3PO missing a hand, and a Vader and Tusken that had gotten decapitated constantly needed their heads reglued. So, I started buying one extra of every figure "just in case one broke".
This has toned down some, but my reason now is more "army building". If I ever finally get around to building some permanent displays, or war gaming, I'll need the extras. Plus, its just cool to have a crapload of tanks and trucks sitting around.

I bought two German F-104s to keep one in the box (just because, maybe to give to my kid), and one to play with from time to time. This is the only time I've ever purchased two exactly identical aircraft. Actually, it happens to be the only time I've purchased two of the same airframe. I have two or three Cpl Sutherlands because I really like the head sculpt. One head has already made it onto the Falschirmjeager that comes with the Hanomag. Speaking of Hanomags, I recently purchased another one for resale. Of the 4 Panzer IVs I have, one was a parts donor, one is now a DAK Ausf G, the last RC model is all original (the latest, greatest relase), and one non-rc just because they seem to be in demand. The things that make me buy multiples tend to vary I suppose. No true rhyme or reason to it.
Oh, forgot to add that I do plan on having a complete Flight 19 roster. I think that falls under the "I can't think of anything better to spend my money on" category.

WOW Gunner that`s pretty impressive mate. Wish we had these items over here never mind on SALE prices. I`d love to get some M113s
You guys in the US do have the advantages with SALE prices I must admit.

I have mutliples of most items in my collection especially the armor items. Looks really cool when you have about 5 or 6 tanks all on display with the soldiers postioned around them. I also have mutiples primarily for trading or selling purposes in the future.

I ended up with 5 M113s because I wanted 1 each of the static OD and desert, then picked up a 2nd OD on clearance ($20 - said what the heck!), then got 1 each of the r/c desert and NATO on clearance for $15 each (how could I NOT?!). I have these tucked in my garage storage loft right now so my wife doesn't see them....
Also, I have 2 M41s, so I can customize 1 and have a back up. It's reaaly a nice piece if you're into armor.

I used to collect only one type of aircraft or armor type, but now have two of some pieces, one of others, then three of still more. I usually get multiples if a paintscheme gets made that I really like (such as with the 21c Corsair, F-104 Stuka, FW-190 and ME-109 E & G) or if there is a new, superior sculpt as in the case of the BBI Corsair, P-51 and 21c retooled P-51 compared to the origional XD plane. Sometimes, what facilitates the process are not only the tempting repaint schemes, but the fact that they're sometimes found for a good price

I have about two of just shy of every aircraft 21st has made

A long time ago...

A long time ago on Groundpounders, someone asked, "who has one of everything?" At that time I jumped in as I proudly had at least one of every item 21st made. Well, sadly, no more. Had to trim down so got rid of the planes I had but still have many mutiples of everything else. Dont know what I would do with all those airplanes

But each to his or her own.

It is very interesting to me to see all the different ways one can go with this hobby, and to see everyones ideas.

I tend to buy only one of each vehicle, but not always. I do buy more than one of alot of the airplane repaints. As for buying multiples of the same paint scheme, I used to buy one to open and one to keep in the box. I have since abandoned this idea because it took up too much space. Now the only reason I buy multiples is to use for repaints, or if I find it super cheap on clearance for possible trade or resale.

Well, you never know when you'll be caught up in a bad neighborhood dispute...especially out here in Kamino (click center mouse button to view pics to the right...)
and getting multiples gives you options to modify...
Took the Standard Luke in Hoth Gear and with a few generic changes such as removing the slab of beef jerky off the side of his head, have made basic Hoth Rebel Ground Force Soldiers.
Took the Rebel Trooper off the Steroids and gave them a more 'regular' look...

MIG Nice clone collection mate
I myself have plenty of Stormtroopers not clonies

More accurate you know....LOL
Though must admit it`s great to hear there`s a fair few here with multi`s & Why they do
I`d love to take a photo of the stuff all layed outside (Vehicles & Helo`s), though it`s going to have to be a day with no children in the house.......LOL

That's wjhat I'm asking about......3-5 of every item? Why? Investment? Resell ? Trade? It's not like everyone has the room to display an entire flight of six P-38's or anything else. I can understand more than one armor piece or truck for dioramas but your walls and cielings have to be rather crowded unless they are stacked up in boxes, and then my question WHY???

Just for the sake of collecting?
OK, OK, so
I have a problem in collecting stuff I can only get to if I stopped buying for about a year, but I have intentions of displaying everything I have except my sale purchases for trades or resell.

I am a collector, plain and simple. It starts by getting 2 of each plane type, one to display, one to keep in the box. Then, you get different paint schemes and all of sudden you have 3-5 of each plane!
I'm slowly but definately gettin away from the paint schemes and sticking with the 2 plane policy.....

I'm guilty!
I have five 21C Corsairs and the first BBI Corsair.
Three of the 21C Corsairs are kept as is: Boyington, Kepford, and Hedrick versions. All three are historically correct or very close. (The Hedrick/Bunker Hill is my favorite-hands down)
The other three (British, Checkernose and Marine Dream) were all bought specifically for kit-bashing. The British one was the first I bought, thinking I'd completely missed the boat on the Corsairs a couple of years ago.
The Corsair holds a special interest for me because my dad was a Navy lifer, and my family is from Akron, Ohio, where the FG-1 Goodyear Corsairs were built.
I particularly like Navy aircraft and will probably end up with 2-3 Avengers. (Occasionally I slip up and get a non-Navy plane

simply because it is cool-looking...I just got the Ridge Runner P-51...although it is undergoing some cosmetic alterations)
I have mixed feelings about more good Corsair repaints, or there will be more in my stable

.
Bottom line is that I guess I'm not really a 'collector' in the truest sense of the word.

I buy a ton of figures as well as armor and planes. Reasons vary from army building to trade material considering Wallyworld's strange distribution system.
I really dig this stuff and I'm afraid one day it will not be available.

WHEN I SEE SOMETHING I LIKE I JUST HAVE TO HAVE DUPLICATES & WHEN THEY CAN BE EXTENDED IN TO FORMATIONS THERE IS ALMOST NO LIMIT. I HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED BEING AN ARMY BUILDER WAY BACK WHEN I WAS 5 OR 6 I WAS COLLECTING MATCHBOX ARMY VEHICLES WITH HEAPS OF DUPLICATES. I HAVE LOST COUNT HOW MANY 1/18 TIGER TANKS & HALF TRACKS & FIGURES I HAVE. EVEN 5 STUKAS FOR A PERSON WHO DOES NOT COLLECT PLANES. BUSY MAKING A BBI ROMAN TORTOISE, JUST HOW MANY FIGURES IN THAT IS ANYONES GUESS.

Yeah, that's pretty much my strategy, but the problem is with 1/18th stuff you can rapidly reach a point where storage space becomes a serious issue, and I do not want to have to start storing nice brand new boxed models in a hot attic like one guy did.

I might as well chime in - army building is huge for me. 3 Shermans feels so much better than one.

15 paras instead of 2....
eventually I'll have to cut back on that instinct, but I'm loving it in the meantime..

You're just like me! I can't walk out of the store knowing that I should-SHOULD buy at least ONE MORE figure!! Then the next day I sit wondering if the other 4 figures I left behind are still there...
