Small Scale Military Headquarters

I am a big fan of the F-82 Twin Mustang. I was looking at my new 21st Century P-51 and thinking how cool an 1/18th scale F-82 twin mustang would be. I would like to see an all black night fighter version.

An F-82 would be a doable mod, that's for sure. You thinking about it?

Never saw or heard of an F-82, is it a Mustang with a contra-rotating prop?

I love the Spitfire/Seafire with the contra-rotating prop, it is beautiful, and the performance gain is immence

They actually saw alot of service during the late 1940s and during the Korean war. The F-82 was initially designed as a long-range escort fighter for B-29s, but saw alot of use as a photo-recon aircraft and in the ground attack role. I believe the Confederate Air Force still operates a flyable example. It would certainly be a doable mod, but would involve alot a wing slicing...

The F-82 was also developed as a replacement for the P-61 Black Widow. Many versions of the F-82 were night fighters.

A 1:18 P-61 would be bad-azz!!!!!

I beg to differ. The F-82 is a damn sight more likely than a Meteor. It remains, however, pretty dad-gum unlikely. lol

I just threw those planes out there from the top of my head. (I did look up the meteor online to get spelling)

The manufactures have to go with mainstream choices to guarantee sales volumes. As the cost to engineer, tool, produce, package, and distribute in 1/18 is, I'm sure a lot more than the 1/48 scale kits producers.

And actually the price is about equal or less that a 1/48 kit. My dad bought a trumpeter 1/32 Avenger kit over $100. I had bought a trumpeter
1/16 scale T-34/85 for $150. Super detailed, however.

I would like to see variety however in upcoming releases. With Me 262, F-86's, Mig-15's, Avengers, on the buy list already.

Preorder: 4 Avengers, at least one going to dad, who got a USAF F-104 for Christmas.

So bring on some different planes! And figures and Armor! All in 1/18 of course.

an F-82 would be a stretch the fuse is 2 feet longer
the plane was based on a P-51H with Allison engines so only the canopys are the same as what they have now

Interesting, I just had an idea,

Why didnt they just use P-38's?
Is this thing better?
If it is, Isnt it cheaper to upgrade/reconstruct the P-38?

the F-82 was faster, had longer range(one flew from Hawaii to New York nonstop) it had 2 pilots because it could stay in air for 8 plus hours.
a friend (who just died ) flew one in Korea and i have all his books and pix now.

the F-82 fuselage was 5ft 10in longer then a P-51Ds
the F-51H fuselage was 14in longer then a P-51Ds
so it would be a real stretch to convert
Betty Joe is the F-82B that made longest Hawaii/ New York flight and is on display at WP Air Force base

the Chain Lighting was almost as big as a P-61 Black Widow and not near as good. plus all engines tried in it were duds.
the final Allison engine were 2 V12s on a common crankshaft that was almost 18 feet long
they also tried it on the XB-39 and they always got hot and caught fire.

all that being said about the differences between the P-51 and F-82, i wonder who will be the first to graft two 1/18 P-51's together, paint 'em black and put a big radar pod under the middle. It would look pretty sharp, regardless of accuracy and i would hand out a gold star to whomever does it.

i would try it but to much on plate right now
